Might as well eat them before they vanish. The daughter of a friend of ours is staying while she looks for a job. She was brought up to eat healthily, she is tall and very thin, But packages of Oreos disappear in minutes, wrapper and all. 😃 Now I know what having sons must be like. ---

Yes- I visit the pit to get a laugh but don’t often post there. I don’t think I have ever pitted any member- I would get too much back. However, I find it amusing the amount of emotion that is wasted between members. ---

This isn’t a criticism because I’m clueless about all of this but I took a brief look at that thread and it was so strange - did anyone here witness the IIDB meltdown almost 2 years ago? If I didn’t know better and I dropped into that thread and replaced the name Ed with ToM I would be certain I was reading the old archives of that blowup, complete with polls and people discussing the validity of a poll that most people ignored. I think that it’s fair to say that the polls reflect the opinion of those that really care about the issue but not necessarily the opinion of the majority of the overall board. In this case it isn’t a board-wide issue so the poll most likely does represent a good part of the pit regulars. (I really, really don’t want to start a discussion of IIDB/FRDB/HH/RnR/TR and the other multitudinous spinoffs that I can’t remember and I doubt it would be appreciated here. I still have PTSD) ---

I actually have no idea what you’re talking about, **Karyn** , so whatever it was, we seem to have bounced back from it. The one event that caused serious damage to the Boards (while I’ve been around, anyway) was when we went pay-to-post. We lost a lot of significant posters over that, but somehow managed to muddle on anyway. I suspect that that’s what’s going to happen again. Since, however, I spend very little time in the Pit, I think I will notice those departures less than I noticed the PTP departures. ---

I’ve been on both sides of these kinds of board fights before and I have to say that it’s nice not to be involved at all. The first time a load of people threatened to leave a place over admin decisions when I was a mod it seemed like the board was going under. There’s a lot of validity that without the posters the board is nothing, but realistically posters come and go and strong boards keep going and new boards form with looser rules that may or may not make it. Posters are important, but none of us are individually irreplaceable. I think these things happen in cycles. Owners set out rules to have the kind of atmosphere they want, little by little things get looser until it’s a place that the owners don’t want to be anymore. They clamp down a bit, much drama ensues, self-bans and dramatic exit speeches come fast and furious and eventually the admins say “Enough. If you don’t like it there are plenty of forums with looser rules to go hang out on.” People freak out, a lot of old regulars leave, things suck for a while and then it all gets back to normal until the next round. I chose this forum with a benign dictatorship model on purpose because pure democracies are often indistinguishable from mob rule and representative models where staff are elected by the posters tend to generate a lot of drama. I think that people self-select forums that best match their personalities and when it stops being a good fit, you move on. Personally I do it quietly with no fuss but I do understand people wanting to fight for what they care about and wanting to make a statement by leaving. ---

That’s true, **criminy** , or at least it is if the admins stick to their guns and don’t back off. I’m having to laugh at myself - when I was on staff and outraged at an owner/admin’s actions, revolution seemed justified. When I was staff and didn’t agree that there was a problem, revolutions were either annoying or “yawn”. But,. regardless of how things go I strongly support the owner of any forum’s rights to have the kind of forum that they want even if they have to make unpopular decisions to do it. If not, why bother having one at all? It isn’t like posters are captive audiences and there are lots of forums for every style of posting. ---

Oat Straw tea. That’s what Maude made for Harold in the movie. I found it one time in a health food store long ago. It makes me feel young just to remember it. One little point that maybe some of you might consider. Not everyone who is protesting the change is someone who gets into namecalling and easy profanity. There are more important things at stake and those things may affect you even if you never go into the Pit. I spent a very focused day yesterday watching a race between a slug crawling up our driveway and a glass of water evaporating. But the sun went down and the slug was lost in the darkness and I couldn’t quite make out the state of the moisture in the glass. I guess I can try again tomorrow if it doesn’t snow much and I can find a slug. (Damned salt trucks!) ---
