No, I remember now that he didn’t write “The Gift of the Magi”, but I still remember reading a collection of his stories, along with that story over a summer vacation long ago.

Damn – that has been my favorite Enormous War Memorial for a long time! And I love it more now that I know that H.H. Munro is included on it!

> \*\*Sorry, **Baker** , I’m in my mid-'30’s now. But perhaps you can take some consolation from this: I read that story from a great paperback collection of classic suspense/horror stories [various authors] back in the late '70’s, that I checked out from the library, and I remember that line from all those years ago! (P.S. – Was the line in question from “The Interlopers”? I don’t remember the title \*\*

Yep, that was from “The Interlopers”

The story is about the heads of two feuding families who meet in the woods while disputing the ownership of a piece of land. A tree falls and pins them down without injuring them. At first they keep cussing each other out, but then they start to talk, and amazingly, resolve their differences and then make plans to have their families visit each other when they are rescued. One sees the figures of their rescuers approaching, but the other, having better eyesight, utters the dispairing line about the wolves.
