Since it appears that the folks who frequent the Straight Dope message boards are not going to know of an example asked for in the OP, I shall move on and not take up anymore bandwidth with this topic.

I don’t know if it’s relevant to OP but for purpose of the U.S. Tax Code, spending even one minute of a day on or over international waters means that for the entire 24-hour day you cannot be considered “physically not present in the U.S.” for purpose of the earned income tax exemption.
