I would much prefer never again to hear any of the following three expressions which seem to be everywhere lately. “I’ve got your back” “Back in the day.” “This (plan, project, whatever) is shovel ready.” Any others? ---

**"I just threw up a little in my mouth."** OK, yes, the line wasn’t that uproarious in _Dodgeball_ five years ago, and it certainly isn’t now that I’ve heard it 100,000 times already. \*\*Using “masturbation” as a metaphor for wasting time (as in “intellectual masturbation”). \*\* First off, does this make all that much sense to begin with? It’s supposed to have a pejorative connotation, but it’s a perfectly acceptable act, so what’s that about? Also, it plainly tries too hard to be transgressive. Maybe when I was in seventh grade talking about beating off would send me into titters of embarrassment, but by now the metaphor is just hackneyed and uncouth. And it makes me think you forgot the words for “daydreaming” and “whimsy.” ---

It means that someone is doing something for their own pleasure rather than the stated purpose. It is not a juvenile put down. It has nothing to do with daydreaming. It is belittling something as self pleasure rather than as something of substance for a wider audience. Like or dislike the expression as you see fit, but do it for the correct reasons. Since I have never heard the expression “shovel ready” until this thread I am not ready to retire it. ---

That was when I decided there was no way in hell I’d ever buy from him. It went on for years. They’re looking for projects that have been designed and approved, but are simply waiting for funding. These projects can start immediately to provide jobs for the laid-off workers. They are ‘shovel-ready’. ---
