Because if they just called her a “Karen” this entire thread would then be hijacked by people arguing that “Only white people can be Karen”
How about Kirin, then?
Gosh, it’s almost like he could have avoided inflammatory, racit/sexist labels while writing his thread he might have ended up with a stronger OP.
We call it a cheque. It avoids the kind of confusion some seemed to get from the OP (I followed the OP just fine, although I agree with some that her race was actually irrelevant to the story)
No offense, but obviously you don’t have a lot of experience with Tiger Moms, now do you? Nor when Tiger Moms get on their high horse. I lived and worked in Asia for 20+ years, speak 2 Asian languages, have a very large Chinese family, ad nauseum.
I’m calling my friends’ wife a Tiger because
- she is a tiger mom
- went full mental on the plane
- I’ve known her since the 1980’s in Taiwan, and peripherally know about her manic depressive episodes ever since
Again, you’re missing my point.
Tiger mom’s typically hail from East Asia and usually are first generation in America. (There are Tiger Mom’s in East Asia as well, but they are usually just called “Mom’s”
)
- speak English as a second or third or fourth language
- usually have been professionally successful in at least one country if not the US. Often professionally successful in the US when going into Karen mode
- feel an immigrants’ need to prove themselves and their family
- think Americans are spoiled with no work ethic
- feel like second class citizen in the US having to prove themselves
- assume bad intentions and are quick to not give the benefit of the doubt.
- will go full mental if they feel being disrespected, dissed or taken advantage because of their race. This can be triggered by something as trivial as not getting the $0.99 discount that expired last week, or getting cut off in traffic.
– The least of which is a white hot burning and all consuming rage for at least 24 hours, but can also include:
– Often incoherent loud lectures about how “there is no democracy in the US” or “you’re just treating me this way because I’m East Asian”
– arguing to prove themselves “right” instead of resolving the issue. Ex. Arguing with a police officer on a ticket
– never admit wrong doing
– Irrational screaming
– throwing and breaking things
Thus, there are similarities with Karen outbursts. But Karens are usually self-entitled ignorant white trash. Tiger Karens are educated and pretty much the opposite of white trash.
Just my take on it. YMMV
Bwahahahahaha. I’m gonna have to steal this one although plenty of folks won’t get it.
But to settle this issue conclusively, are some of your best friends Asian?
No offense, but I have plenty of experience with Asian mothers and fathers. I also have a Chinese relative (second generation American; her mom is first-generation) who’s always getting BS from people because they assume the reason she’s been so successful, first in school and then in her career, is that she has a “Tiger mom.” She does not, and she resents the implication hat she didn’t have the initiative and drive to succeed on her own.
I relate my own experience only to relate how hurtful the stereotype can be. But your list of characteristics has more to do with your own perceptions of East Asian women, not East Asian mothers. If you know some East Asian women who hold disparaging stereotypes about Americans, that’s a shame, but that’s a separate matter than “Tiger Moms.”
I know you’ve had a very tough time in your marriage and that you’ve worked very hard for a very long time to do what’s best. I’ve long admired that about you, and I’m sincerely sorry you’ve had the struggles you’ve had. I’ll leave this discussion with hope that your future is brighter than these past years have been.
Most of the Karens I recall from news articles were professional urban women.
If the point of the story was the size of the fine, why were any of the personal details necessary?
The FAA says it will share the information of passengers who face fines for bad behavior with TSA, which could allow TSA to revoke PreCheck for those who have been cleared for the easier screening process.
“If you act out of line, you will wait in line,” FAA Administrator Steve Dickson said.
The prospect of having to wait in line with the unwashed masses just might have more impact than the fines themselves.
