_Please_ say it’s Albus Dumbledore.

In the final Black Adder series, set in World War I, my wife was highly amused that there was a character surnamed Darling. So you can imagine her delight that the current British chancellor of the exchequer is named Alistair Darling.

Phước is a Vietnamese name that rhymes with “look” and is spoken with a rising tone. When spoken by a native it doesn’t sound at all like our naughty f-word. I’ve seen Yu as a Chinese first name but never Vietnamese.

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that some of these have been selectively heard or creatively spelled in a way that will yield maximum entertainment value.

Harold Butz. Now there’s a classic.

Oh, I’ve known plenty of Osnats. And “Penis” - generally spelled “Pines” - is also fairly common. There’s a very well-known Israeli television personality whose name is pronouced “Guy Penis”; he had an entertainment news show, and he loved getting foreign celebrities to say his name.

Rather superbly, he was also a hero to C.S. Lewis, who immortalized him in _Prince Caspian_ as Clodsley Shovel, the Head Mole, who was responsible for planting the apple orchards of Cair Paravel.

Where I work I have run across the name Young Bang- middle initial ‘A’.

She did not have very much English at all.

Asian college girl.

Also knew a family with the last name Day.

There was a Rainy Summer, a Happy Spring, and a Cloudy Autumn.

Mirickle Fingers. Apparently used to work in my office before I started there.

Wang, who despite his named shortcomings apparently has 3 children.

When I was in the Navy, I knew a man whose title was IC2 (Interior Communicationman, second class), and his last name was Dixx. Poor guy. People used to call him to the quarterdeck over the 1MC (ship-wide intercom) just to be able to say his name to the whole ship. I also knew another gentleman, an Electronics Technician who had made Chief, whose last name was Putz. I just called him Chief, because there are some things you just don’t want to say to a nice person.

We just elected a Putz to the School Board.

Actually, we’ve elected many a putz to the School Board. But this is the first person _named_ Putz.

I love unusual names but I always worry about nicknames. I knew a Kalani, and you could go with ‘Kay’ or ‘Lani’ - but there is simply no diminutive of the name ‘Thankful’!
