Time Person of the Year 2023

I agree if the strike isn’t resolved by November it would be the biggest news story as by then it will definitely start affecting American pop culture far more than just the Trump indictments. The previous writers strike completely changed TV.

Yeah, I think it’s going to be something like this. Or at least Fani Willis & Jack Smith.

I think they’ll go for something like “The Trump Prosecutors”. Certainly the biggest story of 2023 in the U.S. is prosecution of a former President (and current candidate).

Another long shot might be Jay Powell if the economy keeps humming along.

Remember how scary things looked for a brief period during the bank failures a few months ago?

Only if the prosecution actually happens in 2023. There is an excellent chance that nothing much may happen in public until 2024.

I wonder if they’ll choose Artificial Intelligence? They picked the computer in 1982 as “Machine of the Year”, so non-human winners have a precedent. Time’s Entity of the Year?

AI would be a nice safe choice. And, more importantly, if would fit the main condition for being named “-- of the Year” : It would sell magazines.

But the problem is that AI has not yet done anything major. Nothing which could be called the biggest impact of the year.
AI has a lot of promising potential, and a lot of potential disaster…but so far it is all potential…it hasn’t actually affected many people. Yet…

Fani Willis the orderly, well prepared counter to Trump.

Usually, when it’s a group or a non-person, it’s not so much for a single event but for a “movement.” There doesn’t need to be a Skynet moment.

AI has made the news quite a bit; ChatGPT has been involved in academic fraud (i.e. students having it write papers for them), and is a sticking point in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

I think that’s a good fit for what they do. There could be a lot of words written about it’s impact now and in the future. It’s also on the minds of every journalist and writer

Without a resolution to the Trump court cases I don’t see it happening. But who knows? Maybe things will move faster than I think

It would be an interesting gesture of protest to skip this year in recognition of the “fact” that the world’s gone a little further to hell in the last 12 months. Like a NOTA (none of the above) vote.

Then again, it wouldn’t be fair to those who have dedicated their lives to making the world a better place, because they are many. So, maybe a collective of some kind in medicine or science. Oh, wait, I know: consumers. Because we’ve all been royally screwed in the last year or so.

Not only that, but Chat GPT could write the story by itself.

We have? In what way?

Lots of ways. Do you disagree or something?

I’m honestly not following you. I’m a consumer, and I don’t know what you mean about us being screwed in the last year or two. I’m not looking for an argument, just clarification.

Basic necessities such as food appear to be 25% more expensive in my area. Everyone—and I say that without hyperbole—I know is having trouble making ends meet.

Thank you. I understand what you’re saying.

We made it through the pandemic (most of us, anyway), and just when things were looking better, Putin and company have screwed the rest of the world for years to come, and, once again, it’s up to us consumers to bear the burden.

I remember toasting one New Year’s Eve to 2001, but we laughingly toasted to 2002, instead. It’s been that way ever since, and I for one ain’t laughing any more.

Sorry if I come across as cantankerous. I’m here because I enjoy engaging with you Dopers, so I’ll put on a happy face.

ETA: I got the years wrong and have changed them.

Do you mean “consumers” or do you mean ordinary citizens? Or maybe taxpayers. We each are workers, citizens, taxpayers, and consumers. In varying mixture depending on age, wealth, etc. But those are the fundamental roles.

If you’re trying to suggest the “little guy” is screwed and getting screwed-er, well, you won’t get much argument from me except around the edges.

Worldwide Juan Li Average has never had it better. Meanwhile the fattest of the fat cats have also never had it better. And their “better” is much better than Juan’s “better”.

Some folks in the USA and in Europe are seeing themselves go sideways absolutely while sliding downward relatively. Meanwhile a dozen Chinese or whoever are moving up both absolutely and relatively.

It’s a big elephant and some of us have ahold of a suspiciously wet tail.

In 2001 it was Giulinani “for good.” In 2020 it could have been him again, that time “for ill.”
