Pour boiling water down all of your drains aeveral times a day for a week.
I suddenly have this problem too! It’s driving me… well… buggy. I don’t have a swarm. Just literally one bug in a room at a time. One in the bathroom. One in the kitchen. One in my bedroom. None in the other rooms or halls. I squish 'em when I can catch 'em and then 12 hours later a new one pops up in that same room. But just one per room.
I’m really bummed I accidentally killed my venus flytrap because it’s a perfect job for a carnivorous plant.
Can you describe the bug? How big is it?
I’ve never heard of that suggestion before. But I will try it because I have nothing to lose. Thank you for your suggestion.
Did the death of the flytrap happen at just about the same time that you started observing live bugs ? ![]()
The fruit flies (if that’s what they are) lay eggs on stuff. then they hatch in your home. Onions are notorious for carrying fruit flies. I see them at the grocery store! And they lay eggs on bananas often. Peel the onions down a couple of layers, and wash your bananas.
Also, they can get into your garbage disposal. Run some bleach and a large quantity of ice through it.
There are tiny moths that live in the sewer. If a drain is unused for a long time, the water in the trap can evaporate, and let these little moths into your house. A tenant had an invasion of them, and our plumber suggested he use all the sinks once and a while to keep the traps full.
It’s like how you described yours. Tiny. And fast.
And they didn’t kill my flytrap. I forgot to water it for just a little too long during its winter hibernation. Now I stick to cactus. And I still killed a few of them.
I got like 3-4 of them today. Same three rooms. Still just one in a room at a time. So it’s great I don’t have a swarm, but super frustrating because at least with a swarm I could MAYBE figure out where they’re coming from.
I certainly share your frustrations. This sure is a tough puzzle to figure out. I’m thinking of calling a professional pest removal company and seeing what they may be able to do for me. I’ve been trying the suggestion of pouring boiling water down my kitchen sink drains several times every day. So far, the problem has returned. I still find one every day. That is the most interesting aspect of this puzzle.
What can it possibly mean to see only one per day? I have never heard of such a thing and I cannot imagine how that makes any sense. Are they coming from eggs hatching? Only one egg hatches every day? I just don’t know how to proceed with this. If they are coming from outside my home, is it through a window? Up from a drain?
I still have one large onion in my fridge. But how can that be the source? I would have thought that if they ever hatched while inside my fridge, the temperature would kill them before they could get out of the fridge. I only open my fridge three times a day and the onion is stored inside a plastic bag inside a sealed compartment (the fruit and vegetable “crisper” drawer) inside the fridge.
I believe fruit flies can hatch from fruit, often bananas.
Are there open trash cans nearby?
No. That is one of the very first thing I eliminated.
My current suspicions are:
- Eggs that were laid some time ago and that hatch now slowly but surely.
- Drains in the kitchen and bathroom sinks or bathtub and for some reason pouring boiling water down those drains may or may not provide a solution.
- The most likely source is some onions that are kept in my fridge. I have no idea what to do about these - short of throwing out all the onions in my place.
We had an infestation in our office. There is a dumpster nearby, next to the kitchen.
You have to keep up with the boiling water for more than a day or two. It kills the eggs but then the ones that are out flying around can return and lay more. Do it several times a day for at least a week to disrupt the life cycle.
This has worked for me in the past.
Excellent. I have been doing it for two days now and I appreciate your help very much.
Obviously I can’t guarantee that it will work but give it a chance.
davidm “Pour boiling water down all of your drains aeveral times a day for a week.”
This also helps keep down the amount of grease that accumulates in the drain traps. Three times a day is way overkill for the grease, but once a month seems to work well for me.
I have tried this for fruit flies & it may have worked. I was trying many remedies at the time.
Thanks for that info. I will continue doing it for a few more days and will report the results back to this thread.
I have also been trying some other remedies - mostly involving cleaning all dirty surfaces and removing all traces of food that is out in the open.
I forget who it was that said they store all unwanted foodstuff in a plastic bag and then seal it and store it in their freezer until they are ready to throw it out. But I really enjoyed that suggestion and I will start doing that if all else fails.
I think I may know how this problem started.
About one week before I started having this problem, I started eating Kellogs Raisin Bran daily. Every day I would pour the unused remainder of the bowl down my kitchen sink. It was only a tiny amount of bran flakes and milk but I wonder if that could have been the cause.
I do not have a garburator (aka garbage disposal) in my kitchen sink. Would anyone have an opinion if that could have caused this problem?
My problem continues. I had thought they were gone when I didn’t experience one of them until very late in the evening. Then, I noticed one very tiny bug crawling around the bottom of a kitchen window. It did not seem to be able to fly and I don’t know if it was just in the “pre-flight” state or if it was a diff kind of bug.
But I now wonder if the windows might be an entry point for these bugs.
After 3 or 4 days of pouring boiling water down my kithen sinks and bathroom sink and tub, the problem seemed to be improved but then I experienced one of them late into the evening. I will continue the boiling water treatment for a few more days. It doesn’t seem to be hardly any trouble to do that. My kitchen has twin sinks and I bring one pot of water to a boil on the top of my stove while I use an electric kettle to bring a similar volume of water to boil in the kettle. I must admit it gives me a strange satisfaction to think this boiling water is killing the unwanted invaders. I will continue to report the status and I am grateful to you all for your suggestions.
Vinegar and dish soap did literally nothing but make my bathroom smell like vinegar. I forgot I had gotten a poinsettia for xmas and I wonder if that was the source for mine. I put it outside for a few days while the weather is pleasant and we’ll see.
