Way before the internet, I used to say that someone should splice together all the movie scenes that someone HAS TO see to get other people’s comments.

Now that it’s easier, I’ve always thought someone (besides me) should make a _Here’s What You Have To Know_ video. Ooh, it could be a podcast, with episodes that broaden out after doing films and TV shows… “Today, it’s _Here’s What You Have To Know … About Shakespeare!_ With special guest Stephen Fry.”

I haven’t been to a movie theater in years, but isn’t it also true that they don’t dim the lights until the movie proper is about to start? That also indicates that full movie-watching etiquette does not apply until then.

Then you’ve been lucky. They read the order back, no cheese, I check, more than 25% of the time there’s cheese. Even when ordered at a kiosk so there’s no one forgetting what you said.

Some theaters don’t dim the lights during previews but most I go to do. What they don’t dim for are the ads and trivia games and/or entertainment news that they play on a loop while the theater fills before the previews

I’d say it’s close to 75% for me.

I just gave up dairy, and discovered America is The Land of the Free and the Home of the Cheese.

“I’ll have the Hank’s Hamburger, with tomato, lettuce and onion.”
“Okay, that’s a cheeseburger with…”
“No cheese.”
“Okay, so a cheeseburger with no cheese…”
“No, just a hamburger. See [show server the menu], it’s the Hank’s Hamburger.”
“Huh, never heard uh that.”
“But Hank’s your boss, he’s been making this burger WITHOUT CHEESE for decades… and it’s the special of the day! Hank’s Hamburger with fries, $8.”
“Ok, cool…”
“Just out of curiosity, how much would a cheeseburger with no cheese and fries cost?”
“[snort] Lot more than eight bucks, I tell ya.”

And yes, I did get served one with cheese. But I love a good cheddar, so I just tooted all the way home (luckily, it was a long walk).

And since players come and go, you’re basically rooting for whatever guys are wearing your team’s uniform. As Jerry Seinfeld put it, you’re cheering for laundry.

10% was just a guess for me, but I’m pretty sure it’s in the ballpark. Maybe I’ll start keeping track of how often I get cheese on my hamburgers. It just seems like such an odd thing to get wrong. I’m asking them to go to less trouble and not give me something.

The odd thing is, I don’t really dislike cheeseburgers when they’re done well. As long as the cheese comes up to burger temperature, and melts a bit (maybe with some bacon), they can be pretty good. But fast-food places just throw a slice of cold American cheese on the burger. Yuck.

I always order the hamburger, not cheeseburger, at In-n-Out, and I’ve never gotten on with cheese. Must have better quality control there.

I should mention that I’m talking about getting burgers at restaurants (okay, mostly bars) where there are no “pre-mades” or any “fast food” hurry.

But this is happening in _the dairy state,_ so…

Man, y’all are unlucky at burgers. I don’t like fast food cheese or pickles, or mustard and almost never get something I don’t want.

I did have the experience of ordering a burger no pickle, no cheese. The cashier said something about not having to say “no cheese” then turned around and asked me if I wanted cheese. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Be the owner of the theater in this particular case. They’re the owners so they make the rules.

They turn the lights down partially for the previews, then all the way for the movies

I think @FlikTheBlue is just saying that the owner of an establishment can set the rules within the establishment.

That seems like an unobjectionable proposition.

Fwiw, at my local movie theater, they turn off the lights well before the movie begins, and the previews and some other ads are shown in the dark. But if you get there early enough, they have some dumb quizzes and stuff, and the lights aren’t dimmed for those. I think that does suggest that management thinks there show hasn’t started yet.

I don’t know about smartphones. But ever since TV’s started becoming popular, there have subsets of people who refuse to own a TV for religious reasons. In my experience, anybody like that is emphatically NOT looking to get a “rise” out of someone. In fact, they usually don’t mention it unless somebody else brings up the topic first.

I honestly don’t care if someone owns/watches a television or not. I do care when they treat that personal choice as an emblem of moral and intellectual superiority and get smugly condescending to people who chose differently.
