I’m in the market for a damn good umbrella. No plastic parts, solid body, able to withstand high winds without folding like a…well…_broken umbrella_. ---

Maybe I should clarify. I’m not really looking for the most sophisticated umbrella-just the overall strongest and best put together. No need for lights, camera or action. I need it for work, and I work with the most non-geeky people you can imagine. ---

I love the gust-buster. I got one for free from work a couple of years ago and I still use it all the time. Since it is the ugliest umbrella imaginable (it is emblazoned with the face and call-letters of some radio weather guy), I’ve thought about replacing it with another more fashionable gust-buster, but since this is the best umbrella I’ve ever had, I can’t really justify replacing it. Nothing, but _nothing_ will turn that sucker inside out. And frankly, I don’t see the point of a weather-sensor in the handle. How about looking, you know, _up_? 😛 ---

Somehow I’m under the impression you live in the same town that I do. When I moved here, someone told me that we’re not allowed to carry umbrellas because it ruins our image of being web footed and waterproof. Actually, many people have told me this. I think they’re stupid; I own at least 15 umbrellas. Also several raincoats and a spiffy pair of galoshes. I have no useful advice for you, though. I’m just here to offer the obligatory reminder that PacNW people don’t need umbrellas. (I want the weather one though.) ---

Burberry apparently makes a good, but super expensive, one. Bad if you lose umbrellas, good if you like nice umbrellas. ---

I have a double-hinged umbrella. Allegedly, that means that the wind can bend it backwards without breaking it. It seems to work, and the umbrella was quite cheap. ---

I googled serious umbrella and the type of of item you’re looking for seems to be a [golf umbrella](http://www.nextag.com/isotoner-umbrella/search-html). Nothing is completely windproof because if it was there would be a bunch of Mary Poppins not-wanna-be’s flying around. From my experience, the greater the arc in the umbrella the less likely it is to fold back on itself. If you look at the miniature ones they tend to be very flat. ---

I just buy dollar store umbrellas by the six-pack. Sure, they don’t last long, but then, I don’t care when they get lost or broken. ---
