Actually, **Ender’s Game** and **Ender’s Shadow** are being developed as a single screen play even as we speak by Card. They have a stuido, and a director comitted to the project, although at the moment, I am too lazy to find a cite. Googling on “Ender’s Game movie” would probably do the trick.

I put the three movies in the subject in the same bin: overlong stinkers with wooden acting. They all relate to each other in the same way.

The Ender’s Game movie has been “in process” for at least a decade. Orson Scott Card stated a while ago on his website that it was stuck in moviemaking hell, with no real chance of getting done. Sorry. Cites or no cites, I’ll believe it when I see the trailer. See also Dwarf, Red.

Both were historical disaster movies that asked you to ignore major events and hundreds of deaths in favor of - obviously this is just my take - cliched love stories, hackneyed situations, cliched, one-note characters, and wooden dialogue. Blech is to BLECH. 😉

Of course, it owes a debt to LotR anyway. Jackson’s movies have the same kind of feel as the books, in my opinion, and retell a classic story. They live up to the material. The Potter movies have none of the humor or sense of fun that the books do, they’re just slavish retellings that drag on and on. Here’s betting they don’t finish the series of films. \*\*

ROFL. Sorry, while I agree that the Harry Potter movies are not as great as they could have been, there’s no way in hell the movie studies will ever stop churning out them out. It is a $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ machine! And studios like $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ 🙂

It’s certainly a cash cow, but I wonder for how long. The kids in the movies, as well as the kids who read the books, are growing up. The long delay between the last two books may be a problem, and who knows how long it’ll take to get the others done. It’ll be tough making reasonable-length movies for kids out of a couple of 750-page books.

There was a semi-animated version of Lord of the Rings done by Ralph Bakshi a while back. He ran out of money halfway thru.

I agree LotR is not a typical Hollywood movie.
The books are pretty popular and Jackson spent a lot of time preparing his adaptation before filming. Their success suggests to me they will do the Hobbit next.
For me the main point is that Tolkien has a plot (unlike the ghastly puerile ripoff that is the Shannara series).

Lord, what a weird movie. Very trippy. Of course, strangest of all is how suddenly the ending comes - they ran out of money and cut it short about halfway through _Return of the King_. No climax at all!

I’m not sure “relatively unknown actors” is a completely accurate description, given Sir McKellen’s renown. Maybe “no big-ticket Hollywood stars” or “no current Hollywood heartthrobs,” though fairly large followings of several of the LOTR actors have come out of the woodwork.

I’m waiting for an adaptation of Ursula LeGuin’s _Wizard of Earthsea_. I’d settle for just the first book of the series, too. Peter Jackson could make it so that it would be visually beautiful and true to the spirit of the book. I doubt it will happen though because part of the story takes place at a Wizard School™. It may be a really cool wizard school, but I believe that niche has already been filled.

Be that as it may… The best source I’ve seen for updates on the _Ender’s Game_ movie is the [Philotic Web](http://www.philoticweb.net/movie/) site.

It was there, last year, that I learned that Wolfgang Petersen was slated as director. And it was there, today, that I read this very strange piece of news:

> [@](#):
>
> \*\*From the Chairman of Promotions at Warner Brothers Studio:
>
> “We at Warner Brothers have decided it is time to begin promoting the movie Ender`s Game. We are releasing the Official Ender`s Game Cereal on October 1st for we feel that sales will be a rough indicator of how much anticipation there currently is for the upcoming film. The cereal will be comprised of frosted whole weat pellets, as well as marshmallows in the shape of Ender, Bean, Valentine, Peter, Achilles, Bonzo, Graff, and the Buggers. The cereal will have two special features as well. When two opposing characters such as Ender and Bonzo touch each other, they will release a swirl of orange into the milk. Also, when Bean is immersed in milk he will grow to about 2.5 times his original size.”\*\*

Weird. I hope it’s a joke (normally the siute is home to serious info)… if it’s not a joke, it bodes ill for the film, I think.
