Maybe the Titan was attacked by a whale! Or a swordfish. I mean, it could happen. On July 6 1967, the _Alvin_ deep research submersible was attacked by a swordfish. The swordfish became trapped, _Alvin_ was forced to make an emergency return to the surface. The attack had taken place 2,000 feet under water. The swordfish was cooked for dinner. ---

A more generous interpretation is what we’ve all done: realized what a noise was **after a while**. As in, there was an unidentified sound on the recordings, and afterward folks said “Oh, that must have been…” ETA: Hoping this doesn’t qualify as “speculation”, though I’d certainly understand if it does and if so, mods please delete!
