I get what Takei is saying, and I think he has legitimate reason to not like the changes. Sulu doesn’t belong to him, so the producers can do whatever they want, but the fact remains, he played Sulu as straight. He never meant for Sulu to be gay. To now go back and throw out everything he had done as an actor has to hurt a bit. It is diminishing to him and his efforts as a gay actor. True, he doesn’t get any say in how the new movie is made; but the idea that this change honors him is silly. He is exactly right to say bullshit. The producers have every right to ignore him and do whatever they want, but don’t pretend that his is something Takei should be happy about.
