Yeah, this is one of my pet peeves on the boards, when people do it in earnest (I don’t know about **Hawkins** ’s intent). I can’t imagine a situation, online or in real life, where it’s productive to join a conversation just to say “I don’t want to be a part of this conversation.” ---

The playwright George S. Kaufmann was once a panelist on a 1950s TV show. The panel was asked advice by singer Eddie Fisher, who complained that girls wouldn’t date him because of his age. Kaufmann’s hilarious (purported) reply (quoted below) seems to be what **Hawkins** was trying, not too successfully, to steal – the reply loses its zing if nobody asked you for advice.
