Its generational. The older men (and men it is, women\* loathe\* Rush…) have an image of a truth-teller, preconditioned. The truthy guy is brusque, hard-headed, no-nonsense, contemptuous of mere feeling. He knows, deep down, that he’s not very good but refuses to believe that anyone is any better. They’re either pretending, or they’re a bunch of mush-brained hippies oblivious to the hard facts of life.

Dress up your lies as harsh facts that only you have the courage to face, and they’ll fall for it face first, nine times out of ten.

It is **not** generational. I know of plenty of folks in their 20s and 30s who fappishly listen to Rush and his ilk.

Man oh man, it’s been a helluva coupla weeks for Republicans, hasn’t it?

- Bobby Jindal, the bright, shining star of the Republican party, after smacking people in his state who could use some of the Recovery funds by saying he wasn’t sure he was going to accept the money, makes an absolute fool of himself on national TV, coming in after a masterful, inspiring speech by President Obama, talking to the country like they’re dim pre-schoolers, making fun of green cars which will save the government money, scoffing at high-speed rail, and angering several million Americans who live within ashfall distance of volcanos by sneering at funds for “volcano monitoring.” Then it turns out that he was lying through his teeth about the homey, folksy tale of the sheriff vs. bureaucracy.

- Alabama Senator Richard Shelby joining up with the looney birthers fringe by questioning President Obama’s birth certificate.

- Alan Keyes going on a wild-eyed rant, practically calling for the overthrow of the government.

- Michelle Bachman’s “You be da man” inanity.

- John McCain, still pissy about losing, grilling President Obama about an expensive new helicopter fleet that Bush ordered and that Obama had nothing to do with. Helicopters that McCain, had he won the election, would gladly and gratefully have used.

- Louisiana Senator David Vitter, finding out he’ll be challenged in his primaries by porn star Stormy Daniels (I think I’m going to donate to her campaign).

- Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning, who threatened to sue his own National Republican Senatorial Committee if they do not support his reelection in 2010, and dissed John Cornyn while he was at it.

- The new leader _snort_ of the Republican National Committee, Michael “Hip Hop” Steele, tries to appeal to the youts by getting all jiggy wit it, threatens to withhold funds and support from the three Republican senators who voted with President Obama on the Stimulus bill, never mind that they’re very popular in their states and would never be replaced by right-wing nutjobs.

- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, so embarrassed by Republicans that he (allegedly) leaks out the very interesting info that he almost changed parties.

- Him and all the other Republican governors who basically said “fuck you” to the Republicans in Congress because they actually want money for their states.

- Those Republican governors who basically said “fuck you” to the people in their states by even mulling over whether they’ll accept Stimulus money to help people, but who eagerly gobble up the Bush holdover Omnibus earmarks.

- Florida Governor Charlie Crist, who basically said “fuck you” to all other Republicans by sucking up to President Obama. ("…a national leader, his name is President Obama…")

- Utah’s Governor Jon Huntsman who had the perfect diss for Congressional Republicans by saying “I don’t listen or read whatever it is they say because it is inconsequential – completely.”

- Private citizen Norm Coleman, a proud obstructionist, basically saying “fuck you” to the voters of Minnesota, by raising money for more obstruction to keep duly elected Senator Al Frankin from entering Congress. And his manipulating witnesses in the trial comes to light.

- (Now former) Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose, sending a racist email depicting the White House lawn planted with watermelons and the title, “No Easter egg hunt this year” then claiming that he had no idea that watermelons were associated with black people.

- Joe the Plumber only selling 5 copies of his book at a sparsely-attended (11 whole people) book signing.

- Rush Limbaugh, reiterating that he wants Obama to fail in a speech that inexplicably is broadcast to millions via CNN.

- Michael Steel again, almost gaining a tiny bit of respect by criticizing Rush’s speech, referring to limbaugh as an “entertainer” who can be “ugly” and “incendiary,”

- Michael Steel again, losing that speck of respect when he almost immediately apologizes to Rush, saying “My intent was not to go after Rush - I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh. I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. … There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.”

- Bushbots, when Bush’s secret memos are released and it’s revealed that the CIA destroyed 92 videotapes of interrogations and other U.S. treatment of terror suspects.

- The publicity surrounding CPAC, which showed the country what they already knew, that Republicans are total loonballs.

- Tom DeLay, who should be in jail, instead pontificating that President Obama’s Congressional address was “the most irresponsible, hypocritical speech I have ever witnessed.”

- Newt Gingrich, a dickhead of the highest order, saying he was “disappointed” with Obama’s performance so far.

- Sarah Palin, whose documentarian went on national television to tell us emphatically that she is not a “moron.”

- Republicans in the Colorado Senate, who asserted that a) pregnant women with HIV are promiscuous and their unborn children should not be protected “from the negative consequences of their actions” and b) homosexuality is murder.

- Republicans in general, because President Obama’s prime-time speech to the joint session of Congress was watched by over 53 million people and then finding out that his approval rating had shot up to 80%.

Did I miss any? Wow, what a whirlwind of entertainment! I haven’t had this much fun in, like, days! I never thought Republicans could give me so much to grin about!
To be fair, Democrats had their own embarrassment this week when disgraced Senator Roland Burris, who everyone and their mom wants to see resign or booted in a special election, unveiled a web site for his 2010 re-election.

I feel the same way. IMO it is continued intelligent diverse opinions and discourse that will help us move forward and solve problems. Without a strong and clear opposition the Dems are libel to go overboard with power. Obama seems to want that opposition but the Pubs seem so concerned about appearances they can’t actually provide it.

Thanks **BobLibDem**! Madame, if you please.

Thanks **C3** for the Colorado loonball links in response to **Jack Batty’s** query. I was going to put links in for everything but was too tired. I totally missed that other Bachmann bit of lunacy, so thanks for that too. That link shows that she’s yet another batshit insane cur willing to besmirch the good name of ACORN (which did nothing wrong, never did anything wrong) by lying about the organization. How very typical. Republican = lying about ACORN (among many other things).

Thanks for the Chris Buttars tip. I hadn’t heard that either.

I also hadn’t heard about Tim Crawford. Thanks for that one **Squink**.

Here are some other items that came to mind.

- Republicans so desperate they turn to a creepy [13 year old](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/27/jonathan-krohn-13-year-ol_n_170642.html) conservative wunderkind to prop them up.

- Republicans, via Rush Limbaugh again, because he was smacked down (or, better yet, lifted up) for being head of the Republican party by an oh-so-polite-and-mock-serious Rahm Emmanuel, who [complimented the hell out of Limbaugh](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/01/rahm-on-rush-hes-the-voic_n_170854.html) while twisting his knife into the backs of Republicans everywhere. God I love Rahm!

- Republicans, via Their Fearless Leader Rush Limbaugh again, because Limbaugh was laughed at by [David Letterman](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/02/letterman-calls-rush-limb_n_171259.html), Katie Couric, [White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs](http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/white-house-fires-back-at-rush-limbaugh-2009-03-02.html), [DNC chairman Tim Kaine](http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/3/2/204224/5054/898/703877) and in countless blogs, TV shows and editorials.

And these Bush memos are the gift that will keep on giving for a long, long time. I’ve only just started reading about them, but besides the CIA destroyifying tapes, this is [my favorite bit](http://www.newsweek.com/id/187342) so far:

> [@](#):
>
> In perhaps the most surprising assertion, the Oct. 23, 2001, memo suggested the president could even suspend press freedoms if he concluded it was necessary to wage the war on terror. “First Amendment speech and press rights may also be subordinated to the overriding need to wage war successfully,” Yoo wrote in the memo entitled “Authority for Use of Military Force to Combat Terrorist Activity Within the United States.”
>
> This claim was viewed as so extreme that it was essentially (and secretly) revoked—but not until October of last year, seven years after the memo was written and with barely three and a half months left in the Bush administration.

This, actually, I would probably blame on his publicist. It’s the job of the PR people to build a crowd. Contrary to most people’s idea, fame and publicity doesn’t just radiate off of famous people, gathering in random folks to every event they hold. You’ve got to not only advertise it, but also work to build a promised crowd. Assuming that one will just show up, as they must have done here, is incredibly stupid. “Who will just randomly show up” even at a conference, is always extremely variable and unpredictable (especially when other things might be going on that suck away potential attention).

Even really really famous people crowd build their public appearances.

Edit to add, the very fact that Joe/Samuel would need a publicist at CPAC is pretty bizarre. I thought everyone (well, those insane enough to go to CPAC anyway) loved him. I’m sure he did too.

Huh, I wonder if he’s a Scientologist. In a bit of Black Helicoptering, [this blog](http://www.andrewhalcro.com/van_susteren_scientology_and_sarahpac) wonders about the link between Palin and Scientology.
