To the loving stranger who shot my cat

I guess I am guilty by association. Look, I do not condone what my brother does, but when you spend a great deal of time and effort making your yard attractive to animals and enjoy watching them play on your property, like
putting bird feeders out to attract them and have the neighbor’s cats tear the birds to pieces it is a little hard to take. Cats kill that is what they do.

Birds get eaten that is what they do.

Your brother sounds like a dick of the highest order. I have four cats that I keep indoors and the reason I don’t let them outside is that they are natural predators that eat other animals (that they can catch).I understand that it is a persons right to kill them if they invade someones yard or barn but killing everyone that one might see is leaning toward the mentally unbalanced side. You should get your brother some help before he graduates to people or runs into someone like I used to be in my youth . Someone who would beat the shit out of an asshole who eyeballed me or maybe shot cats for fun. YMMV.

My husband is the most peaceful person I have ever known, and didn’t even own any guns until he inherited three from his father.

On the other hand, if he ever gets his hands on the mockingbird that keeps pooping on his Prius…

If I follow the logic, that means someone who loves and keeps cats is justified in killing your brother.

Some people shoot cats. That is what they do.

Seems like a silly argument to me. I thought we were discussing how things should work, not what would happen if everyone was left to their own devices.

You’re not guilty by association, but it wasn’t clear from what you first posted that you didn’t condone what your brother is doing. If he knows the animals belong to his neighbors, he could take other, less violent, steps.

And frankly, bunnies? They’re destructive chewing machines, so I don’t know where he gets off thinking they’re so great. :stuck_out_tongue:

::clears throat::

Bunnies aren’t just cute like everybody supposes!
They got them hoppy little bunny legs and twitchy little noses!
And what’s with all the carrots?!
What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?!
Bunnies! Bunnies! It must be BUNNIES!!!

I’m really sorry about what happened to your cat, that’s an absolutely awful thing for any creature to have to suffer through, but I can’t help but stare, jaw-agape at that post of yours.

You know your neighborhood isn’t even remotely safe. You know there are dangerous people doing dangerous things. You know there are speeding, huge cars. Yet you let your cat out.

That’s downright irresponsible pet ownership.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a militant cats must be indoors type of person- I think them being outside is fine if your neighborhood is safe. Your neighborhood clearly isn’t safe.

Your cat would have never been harmed if you had taken the logical step of looking around and realizing the outside world where you’ve chosen to live in is not hospitable to little kitties. Do the responsible thing and take care of your damned cat. Better yet, do the intelligent thing and assess your surroundings.

Not all cats want to go outside. In my sampling 100% of the cats I have owned (all two of them) hated outside.

Minx always desperately wanted to be on the other side of the door. If she got past me, she would scoot out, get two feet, realize she was in the big bad outside, and bolt back in the house. That would cure her desire to escape from “prison” for while.

Sammi has no interest at all in going out. I think I would need a crowbar to get her out the door. She’s pretty unique though. She was found abandoned and pregnant and brought to the shelter, adopted, found abandoned and pregnant and brought to the shelter. Then she was there for a year before I adopted her. She loves to sit on the windowsill and look out. But whenever I bring her outside (she comes with me to visit my sister and things like that) she has a fit.

This suits me just fine. I live near a fairly busy intersection. Even if I didn’t, I am too much of a worrier to just let my pet roam. It just makes it easier on me to know that she doesn’t want to go out anyway.

(Oh, and my cat has her claws, BTW)

ForumBot, I am sorry about your kitty. I hope he heals up soon.

Yeah, it is a silly argument. I wasn’t really being serious.

Anyway, update. My girlfriend called the police, and they say there have been about three people in the last week in my area who have complained, and they have a very good idea of who did it. Since he discharged a .22 (it is now confirmed to be that, not a BB gun), he can be charged with felony discharging a firearm within city limits with a penalty up to 5 years in jail.

Woo!

To everyone telling me to keep my cat inside: I hear you. I don’t want to argue in the pit. It gets nasty, and there’s no need for it to over something we can all agree is horrible.

If you can afford it, you absolutley should spend the money, the complaint was that it was “money I don’t have right now” - telling me that there are more important things than cats to spend it on, like, oh I dunno, maybe insurance, education, mortgage, proper diet - all of which have to come ahead of a pet.

Don’t misunderstand me - its not that a cat is not worth it, or you don’t have a responsibility, just that a cat is pretty low on my list of priorities when it comes to so much money.

It really makes me burn to see people complain about being short of money, or find it difficult making ends meet, but then go and spend large amounts of money on pets. (granted this is an unexpected expense, but at the end of the day it is only a cat)

Not to be mean about it, but ever hear about FIV? About FeLV? Every time you let’em out, you’re asking for it.

I had the feeling that this was your feeling early in the thread. I should have done what I’m doing now which is to report this post, asking this to be moved to MPSIMS.

As a suggestion, if you don’t want to argue in the Pit, you might want to start future threads like this one in MPSIMS. You’d get a lot more support for the tragedy and less animosity for your role in it. It’s not guaranteed, but it’s more likely. By posting in the Pit, you’re giving the impression that your hands are clean in the thing you’re ranting about. . . well, at least, that’s my assumption when I read Pit threads where someone is ranting about something.

I agree with you that ForumBot would probably have been happier had he/she started a thread on this topic in MPSIMS, but I think the OP is a bit too rough for the thread to be moved there. I can close the thread if ForumBot requests (although there’s nothing to stop people from starting a new one if they want to call him/her a douchebag for letting the cat out), but that’s about it at this point.

This is the reason we encourage people to not automatically put venting threads in the Pit. Just because you’re upset doesn’t mean a thread can’t be appropriate for MPSIMS.

Thanks for the explanation.

Who let the cat out?

Douche Douche Douche Douche

Who let the cat out?

Douche Douche Douche Douche
(sorry, forumbot, I do not think you’re a douche, or anything like that, but I have to move as my muse moves me.)

(yes, my muse moves me to parody who let the dogs out. I never said it was a good muse.)

A muse is a muse, so let it loose
'Cause parody needs no excuse, Toulouse
So just vamoose
Don’t be abstruse
Cut loose the douchely muse!

[sub]Should I oughtta be ashamed of that?[/sub]

You know, people have a right to their different viewpoints. And I agree with what he said. My two cats, ages 7 and 10, respectively, have been indoor/outdoor cats their entire lives. They were born outside and ran wild outside and then I adopted them. I let them out during the daytime and they come in at night. I believe that animals should be allowed to be animals and do their thing outside. A cat who gets to roam may have a shorter life, but the way I see it, he has a happier one because he gets to BE A CAT.

As for the $1300 vet bill, well, the honest truth is that I love my cats, but I wouldn’t go into debt for them. If I had the money, that’s one thing, but if I didn’t I would have to let the injured animal go. Most of us have a lot of responsibilities that come before our housepet. With a mortgage, bills, kids, etc., who can justify spending that much on a cat? In my life, PEOPLE come first, not the animals. I don’t even see how you can relate the two. I do everything I can to keep my pets happy and healthy, they are fixed and vaccinated and they get occasional checkups from the vet. But I am not going to make my family go without to spend an insane amount of money on a cat.

The reason I didn’t post it in MPSIMS was that the OP was too profane (and I wasn’t going to censor it), and I thought the reactions might be just as profane. I’m willing to let the “omg cats INSIDE!” people to have their fill, I just won’t give them the time of day.
