I’m at LAX, early for my red eye, so I grab a beer near my gate. The unfortunate thing for me was that I was two seats away from Mr loudmouth, who’s going on and on about how politics hav lost their decorum, that when Reagan and Tip O’Neill were in their seats of power, they had mutual respect, and that, well, things were just better then. Do you know when it all went bad, he asks, quite audibly, when politics wasn’t respectful? He says that it was Clintons use of the phrase, it’s the economy, stupid. Hmmm. Maybe I should’ve simply ignored him, but I couldn’t resist. I interjected that the phrase was self referencing, that he was reminding himself what to focus on during the campaign. Well he couldn’t believe that someone would doubt him, and that I was the first person that came up with that theory to him in the nearly 20 years since the phrase became part of the culture. I also pointed out that the Willy Horton ad mightve been just a bit more disrespectful of a gesture. Of course he didn’t remember the ad. Yeah right. Jerk. ---
