> I see a lot of people here using fireworks as a talisman for various life ills. If fireworks keep you from sleeping it means you probably need to fix your sleeping habits, fireworks should not be a major disruption to sleep. Additionally lots of things will be loud enough to wake you up in the middle of the night, falling back to sleep should not be very difficult or disruptive. If you’re getting otherwise healthy sleep, being woken up in the middle of the night should not be a big deal.
>
> BTW I struggled with serious insomnia and used prescription sleep aids for years, I’m not being blase–I’m saying I don’t assume **my unhealthy** sleep pattern justifies me crying about the unfairness of the world. Noise in a civilized area is normal, what’s abnormal is minor sleep disruptions making you so upset you cry and throw temper tantrums. That to me is a sign you have bad sleep health, as a sufferer of that very thing, I’m telling you there **are** ways to improve that, and crying about noise isn’t one of them.
>
> PTSD is a tragic thing, but I’m highly skeptical that most veterans with PTSD are set off by fireworks. I’m a veteran myself (because of all the Stolen Valor shit on the internet, I like to point out most of my military career fell in times of peace and I was a REMF for most of it but I was deployed to combat zones twice–i.e. I’m a veteran in that I’m a retired servicemember, I don’t have a closet full of combat medals); and I’ve been known to get drunk at the local VFW hall, there’s been a lot of guys in there openly mock the idea that fireworks sets off PTSD. These are people who fairly honestly talk about the fact they **do** have PTSD.
>
> Now PTSD as a pyschiatric thing, is going to have variable manifestations from person to person, so I’m not saying no veteran’s PTSD has ever been set off by fireworks. But there is a fuck ton of stuff that can set off PTSD (including in the millions of regular civilians who have PTSD for various reasons unrelated to serving in combat), and we can’t structure our society around that.

Tell me, when you’re wearing your doctor hat, do you post as **Marin\_Jekyll**?

Sure, however there are also situations like my own. We have four dogs. One is horribly noise phobic. She is still shitting blood/mucous (stress colitis) from fireworks on the fourth. One other dog is mildly affected, and the other two are fine, even seem to like it. We have worked with a trainer.

We treat all four dogs the same, although each is from a different background.

I actually just straight don’t believe the claims expressed here about the duration, frequency or etc of fireworks. I’ve lived around people launching fireworks my whole life, it’s never that level. I think we just have a bunch of easily triggered people mad that they heard a loud noise–to which I say again, move out into a farm house or something if you can’t stand noise outside your house. You live in a society, not a monastery.

100% they have been. I have two dog breeders in my immediate family (who have competed in shows etc for years) and I can tell you that virtually none of their dogs or my dogs have had the sort of crippling anxiety issues around loud noises that I so frequently see expressed on the internet.

Dogs are evolved to socialize in a codependent relationship with humans, they feed off your emotional cues and your responses to things. Your dog hears a loud noise and gets scared, so you baby it, shower it with attention etc to make it feel better. That has now created a reward feedback loop teaching your dog that it’s good to get upset and be afraid.

That may just be because you are an idiot.

They don’t bother me or my dogs, but they certainly are full on and constant for hours. That you have not experienced this is just your own ignorance. To accuse others of lying because it does not fit your experience is the mark of being a rather pathetic little creature.

Obviously you’ve not lived around people launching fireworks at that level. When you live in a neighborhood with a couple hundred homes, it doesn’t take much for it to be a constant thing. Maybe you live in a less populated area, and so don’t have as many neighbors to invite you to join in their exuberance.

Yes, and one part of living in a society is actually respecting the those around you. We do live in a society, not a free for all where we don’t give a shit about our neighbors. Well, you probably don’t.

> Four years after a state law passed allowing consumers to buy stronger varieties of fireworks, numerous fires and at least two fatalities have been blamed on fireworks across Pennsylvania this Fourth of July weekend.

From the article:

In [Lebanon, firefighters spent much of Sunday night through Monday at Consolidated Scrap Resources](https://www.pennlive.com/news/2021/07/firefighters-have-left-the-scene-of-3-alarm-fire-at-central-pa-recycling-center.html) on the 300 block of North 14th Street, where a three-alarm blaze and explosion ripped through the building.

While the investigation continues, Lebanon City Fire Commissioner Duane Trautman acknowledged Monday that fireworks might be to blame.

“We were already unnerved by the explosion and they’re going up overhead, big booms, fireworks, while we’re here fighting this,” he told the station. He said there has been a reckless use of fireworks in Lebanon and around the region, adding, “It’s disgusting.

I’ve never lived around people who set off fireworks like what’s described here, and I live in a densely populated suburb. (where fireworks are illegal) But when someone makes a plausible factual claim (not, “I was abducted by aliens”, but “my neighbors set off fireworks until long after midnight, and a lot of them do it on nights other than the 4th”) my inclination is to believe them.

Thanks for this. I have mild PTSD from my lovely time in Vietnam, which is triggered by loud noises. As with most people, someone dropping a book makes me jump, but continued explosions of mortar fireworks nearby is too much like the real thing, and really starts to freak me out. It was quieter this year than in past years, as even most of the infants who like to blow shit up realized that after last year’s fires and our recent heat wave, it was probably a really bad idea to set things ablaze. I was fine with what was going on off in the distance, but the cat was on her belly until it stopped.

I live in a densely populated suburb were fireworks ARE legal. Want to launch motars from your backyard? No problem (in fact, the people directly behind my build did. For several hours). Fourth of July around here has been described as “Bombs over Baghdad”, “The Blitz”, and various other colorful metaphors implying destruction and war. It can’t be said to “start” at a particular time on the 4th so much as lingering on from the pre-4th festivities, ramping up as people get out of bed and move outside, and are a full-on din from about noon until after midnight (legally you’re supposed to stop at 1 am, and surprisingly about 95% of it does).

The air smells like gunpowder for days.

The upside to all this shit being legal is that people don’t feel a need to hide it which I think leads many to engage in safer practices. For example, a couple families in my building used sidewalk chalk to mark out a launching area on the building parking lot well away from burnable stuff instead of sneaking around alleys and such. No need to hide, after all.

Of course, you ARE liable for any damage you cause.

But my god is it fucking noisy around the 4th.

Although my birds aren’t bothered as much by the noise as by the lights and colors after dark. I have no idea why they find that so upsetting but they do. At least it’s easier to block light than sound. They still don’t sleep much, but they can snooze the next day. Me, I usually have to go to work.

I’ve admittedly never been in a war zone, but I think that my neighborhood does a pretty good job of trying to replicate one.

You have the little bangs, almost constant from somewhere around that sound like small arms fire. You have mortars going off constantly. Then there’s little pauses, where it gets quiet for a few minutes as people start to reset. Then it starts up again, first with one or two, then others joining in, raising back to a giant cacophony.

I can certainly see how someone who has actually been in a battle would find it to be rather disturbingly familiar.
