This afternoon I had a beer whilst being towered over by the sixteenth tallest lighthouse in the world. > **[Penmarc'h Lighthouse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penmarc%27h_Lighthouse)** > > The Phare d'Eckmühl, also known as Point Penmarc'h Light or Saint-Pierre Light, is an active lighthouse in Penmarc'h, Finistère department, Brittany, France. At a height of 213 feet (65 m) it is one of the tallest lighthouses in the world. It is located at the port of Saint-Pierre, on Point Penmarc'h, on the southwestern corner of Finistère and the northwestern entrance to the Bay of Biscay. > The tower was built following a decision on April 3, 1882 to modernize the coastal lighthouses and rais... The strangest thing - and the photo in the wiki article shows this quite well - is that it’s urban. You’re driving through town and suddenly, stone me, wtf, how did that get there?? Very odd. j ---

This lighthouse is likewise in town surrounded by houses. Not real tall though. > **[Key West Lighthouse](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_West_Lighthouse)** > > The Key West Lighthouse is located in Key West, Florida. The first Key West lighthouse was a 65-foot (20 m) tower completed in 1825. It had 15 lamps in 15-inch (380 mm) reflectors. > The first keeper, Michael Mabrity, died in 1832, and his widow, Barbara, became the lighthouse keeper, serving for 32 years. The Great Havana Hurricane of 1846 destroyed the lighthouse; the USS Morris, which was wrecked during the storm, reported "a white sand beach covers the spot where Key West Lighthouse stood". ... ---
