Yes it was british until 1997, and was supposed to be autonomous for 50 years after that. China invaded hong kong right then, and made it a puppet state of china. Point being, the EU membership was supposed to continue. ---

You seriously have no idea what you’re talking about. Hong Kong is still a Special Admnistrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. It is not a puppet state. China did not invade Hong Kong in 1997 or any other date. And the Sino-British Joint Declaration does not state what you think it does. ---

I was in HK a month ago, and noticed several police wanted posters, and in all cases, 100%, the crimes that the person was wanted for, was campaigning or disseminating information about political independence. The 1997 treaty was not ideal, but it’s already been broken, decades before it was meant to expire. In fact, I think China has officially said that the treaty is void some years ago, before imposing the new “security” laws. ---
