tolkien fans - strangest LOTR illustrations ever

Pauline Baynes, yes, those are brilliant - she also did nice illustrations for Narnia books.

I, too, was reminded of the Book of Kells. Very nifty take on the Professor’s work. Thanks!

Ain’t that the truth, though.

Beautiful!

I have one of the original posters of Barbara Remington’s cover painting. Which I adore.

That deserves a link.

Love the “Tits 'n Lizards” school of illustration.

I like Shelob.

Grond doesn’t look quite as formidable as I imagined, though…

Wow, those images are perfect in a way I never could have anticipated.

Tres cool!

It’s wonderful when something you’ve known forever is reimagined like that!

I’m the only one who doesn’t like them I guess. They remind me a bit of the ACE covers though and other early BB paperback covers: http://mysite.verizon.net/aznirb/mtr/oop-lotr.html

She had to dress that way. She’s fighting for her home.

I’m not a fan of the more Medieval-looking parts. I don’t like that sort of art, where everyone is facing the same way and appears to be corpses with broken necks on marionette strings. I like the ones where that style is missing, though.

The Annotated Hobbit is full of odd illustrations from various (usually non-english) editions. The one that always amused me most was the Russian edition - apparently, the Russian language doesn’t differentiate between “Feet” and “legs” so when hobbits were described as having “Furry Feet” the Illustrator took that as “Furry legs”
