I think the longest thread ever was the wonderful “What if someone else had written the Lord of the Rings” thread. I think its archived around here somehwere. It’s what brought me to the SDMB, and is Tolkien related to that was a trivia question for this thread too!

It was Erendis, and she did teach her daughter not to trust men, but I was going more for the advice that women fight in their own way, that they are just as strong as the men of Numenor and just as stubborn. That Ancalime should “set her roots into the rock and face the wind, though it blow away all her leaves”, which is as close to a direct quote as I can remember without paging back.

And Eregion (answering my own bonus question) is also the name of a character in the expansion to the sequel of Ultima 7. So he’s in Serpent Isle, specifically Silver Seed, though I think he shows up whether you install the expansion or not. He comes from another world, which is proven to sadly not be Middle Earth. 🙂

This might be a little too esoteric. Specifically I’m looking for the name of the place where the road from Erech goes east. There’s a ford over a river there, and a hill, and there’s a town there. I’m looking for the name of the town.

Also, for fun and because I really DO know this…

1. What fiefdom of Gondor is this in, and what is the name of its lord at the time of the War?

Answered

1. What is the name of the land where Men awoke?
Hildorien (Arien)

2. Prophecies:
a. Who correctly foretold the passing of the Witch-King?
Glorfindel (Qadgop the Mercotan)

b. After which Battle was said foretelling?
The battle of Carn Dum? (Qadgop the Mercotan)

c. Who named the last King of the North Kingdom?
Malbeth the Seer (Qadgop the Mercotan)

d. Why was this done?
He’d either be the king of a far greater realm, or no king at all (Qadgop the Mercotan)

e. These two met, though all the hosts of Mordor lay between them?
Aragorn and Eomer (Qadgop the Mercotan)

1/4. Her mother is Telerin and her father is half-Noldorin and half-Vanyarin. (Arien)

2. What characters have come back from the dead in Tolkien’s works?
Gandalf the Grey, Beren One-Hand (5 time champ)
Luthien Tinuviel, Glorfindel (jayjay)
Also arguably Sauron and all of the Ringwraiths, and probably a great deal more unspecified Elves (Feänor is regarded as notable, in that he hasn’t yet come back), and Durin the Deathless. (Chronos)
Finrod, who is the only other elf besides Glorfindel who’s reembodiment after death has been mentioned. (Arien)

3. Name as many names of the Sons of Feanor as you can.
Maehdros, Maglor, Celegorm, Curufin, Caranthir, Amrod, Amras, Maedros, Cranthir, Damrod, Diriel, Damras, Kelegorm, Kranthir (Qadgop the Mercotan)

A spear named Aiglos, which none could withstand. (5 time champ)

8. What did the weapon’s name mean?
Snow-point (5 time champ)

9. What was Gil-Galad’s real name?
He had a title or honorific of Erinion I think. (What Exit?)
His father name was Artanáro, his mother namewas Gil-Galad, meaning “Radiant Star”, and his title was Ereinion, meaning “offspring of kings”. (Qadgop the Mercotan)

10. Whose son was he per the ‘canon’?
Son Odereth or Orodreth son of Angrod son of Finarfin youngest son of Finwe who was of course Son of none. (What Exit?)
Son of Fingon in Sil, it gets complicated after that. Son of Orodreth, who in some versions was the son of Finarfin, but in others the son of Angrod. (Qadgop the Mercotan)

11. Who was Earwen?
Earwen was Galadriel’s mom. I have no idea what her name means. She was the daughter of Olwë, and thus the niece of Elu Thingol. (Qadgop the Mercotan)

12. What does her name mean? (Might help is I give her name as Eär wen. Both pieces of her name are fairly common.)

Not quite. The river I’m speaking of meets the Ringlo after it flows through this ford. I’m looking for the name of the township there.

It _is_ in Lamedon, with Angbor the Fearless (IIRC; at least I know it was Angbor) running it.

Are these the ones with the… oh, how can I describe them. My mother had a set of Tolkien paperbacks, the ones I first read the series with. They had all sorts of wild creatures on them in various seventies-vibrant colors; they looked something like paper cut-outs.

Upon Googling, no, apparently not. Ah well.

Map-inspired question!
