I figure having a long “to read” list gives me something to live for.
That’s me - except I’d never make big stacks of books. That might damage them!
When I jointed the SDMB group on Goodreads I was AMAZED at your book list! You’ve read so much!
What an excellent idea! When I finish indexing, I’ll write a Perl script to select a random book out of my list. Magazines I want to read more or less in order, to get the serials and story sequences. I’ve been way behind, I’ve finally tried starting with January 2008 issues to at least read current stuff.
I’ve used an old Star Office 5.2 database for mine, which can be dumped into a csv file. I’ve decided to move to mySQL. In fact my VP just told me that I should learn it to teach everyone else, so I’ll get paid to figure out how to index my books better.
You’re the toughest critic of all my Goodreads friends. Next time you give a book five stars, I’m going to go out and buy it.
I figure that in the time it takes me to read one book I have bought three more. This is not a good statistic. I have about 300 unread books in my house and have read 110 so far this year.
Yikes, the pressure! I’m tempted to go back and take stars away from some of the ones on my list now.
I am sorry, the phrase “too many books” doesn’t make sense.
Unfortunately, I have made inroads on my “To Read” pile, so it’s time to replenish it.
I have started a Filemaker database of my books, but I keep bogging down (Wow, I haven’t read that one in a while - let’s read it again NOW), so it’s nowhere near complete. Having to work and cook and do chores really cuts into my reading time.
And of course, I do spend a lot of time reading this message board…
I tease my wife incessantly when she walks into a closet full of clothes and says she has nothing to wear.
She teases me when I look at a pile of books and say I have nothing to read. You know, sometimes you’re just in the mood for something besides what’s in the pile.
Just curious, how much time do you spend reading? No way could I get through almost two books a week.
I’m not sure. Generally less than an hour a day during the week. Two to three hours on a weekend day.
We have several thousand books in our house, various ones my mother and I have accumulated and my late father’s collection. I don’t know why I keep buying new books as I’ll never get through all the ones in the house I’m interested in. I only discovered good reads the other day. I’m not sure I need it so I might steer clear of it!
Books. I just like to gaze upon them. My office is moving and I was asked to indicate my furniture preferences. I said I didn’t care as long as they crammed as much shelving in there as possible.
Thanks, everyone, I don’t feel so bad now. Money’s tight, so I rely on the public library for my books. I’ve 21 books checked out now, and 27 in my “requested” que. Every month I peruse the “Whatcha Reading xxx '0x” & request whatever looks good. 90% of the time I enjoy the selections; when I do I usually look online for more books by the same author & add them to my que.
Cooking With Gas, I read more than two books per week thusly: I slip a book into my bag to read at work during my lunch & breaks (I finished Christopher Golden’s The Borderkind tonight. At the end of the day, I like to read myself to sleep, lying in bed, with a glass of milk & a bit of good chocolate beside me while I enjoy a second book. Yeah, I’ve lost that last half hour’s sleep to finish a book; but when the hero’s been in peril for 350 pages, what’s the loss of some sleep to see how he/she overcomes the villian?
Love, Phil
I love the library. Mine is within walking distance and will order books from anywhere. I used to want to own every book–now I just want to read every book. Someone else can own them.
I was feeling all relaxed, thinking that my to-read stack was rather small, compared to most of the ones listed in this thread. And then I remembered my Amazon wish list. Does it count as a book stack, or is it a way to avoid a book stack.
I know I feel relieved when I put a book there. I can forget it for awhile without losing it.
That’s how I use my Amazon wish list too, to keep from forgetting a book someone mentioned that I might want to read one day.
If you do decide to join, we have a SDMB group there.
Me too! I have about twenty things on hold right now and that’s an unusually low level for me. Time to start shopping through the catalog again.
For me, the order of the TBR pile is sacred, because books have to go back to the library on time. That said, I stop the world when a new Stephen King book comes out. I think my copy of Just After Sunset comes today!
