Wait, we’ve been told that, from a monetization standpoint (i.e. ads), it is better to have more limited scope threads than omnibus threads. And you want to go counter to that trend? This is self-correcting. Either the threads will quickly lose interest and drop from the front page, or people are interested and using the board as it is intended. So what is the real complaint? That some people are interested in celebrities you’ve never heard of? Or is the problem that seeing these threads reminds you of your own mortality in these trying times? ---

I think they are fine. When someone made a moment or more in your life a bit better, then a small appreciation thread is a nice thing to do or join. It is a recognition and a thank you. ---

Wow, I’ve never before heard anyone complain about people posting RIP thread when a relative dies. I think message boards like this are often a good place to mourn, and get sympathy, without the mourner having to expend too much of their emotional energy. ---

I, too, think they’re fine. And I’m not noticing an increased number of them. People want a place to remember, celebrate, honor, and talk about a celebrity they liked. And for sharing a personal loss, I’m fine with that too. People need to grieve. And as the saying goes, “A joy shared is twice the joy, and a sorrow shared is half the sorrow.” ---

I generally prefer Omnibus threads. I don’t want to wade through a bunch of threads that people start every time a politician says something stupid, or a cop beats someone, or every time their cat has diarrhea. But I suppose I’ll make an exception for deaths during These Times. I’ve already lost one friend, and that won’t be the end of grieving those dear to me in the days to come. Which includes B-List actors (take care, James Cromwell and Bradley Whitford…). ---

A nasty dig… but a good one. I could see myself tempted to start a thread when Tom Lester finally dies. See? Meaningful to me, probably not many younger members know him. Because we did only have three channels… and a high point was watching Green Acres. Since “Sam” and “Ralph” went, “Eb” is the last one still with us. ---
