Well? No, really, you’re in what looks like a well-house. There is a round shaft in the middle with a low wall around it to deter the terminally careless from falling in, and a windlass over the hole with a rope wound on it, a sturdy wooden bucket on the end of the rope, and a crank handle. There’s a ratchet on the handle, at present stopping the bucket from moving. The room has the musty smell of damp old rope, but nothing worse. ---

There is a door on the opposite side (not sure where you got “right” from - it’s on the far side from where you entered the well-house) but, on inspection, it is locked, with the typical sort of English-church keyhole. Probably too strong to break without special tools. ---

Can I check the Well bucket for a key or anything? “You know… if anyone had heard some frantic heart beats behind that door we just walked through… and yet there’s no one in this room… maybe they went one of two places… Anyone want to at least light up the well so we can see if there’s anything down there? At worst- a torch on a bucket would work and we could lower it down and back up without any problems…” ---

There’s no key in the bucket, but it certainly looks possible to fit a torch in it without anything catching fire. ---

What you do notice, as you wind the bucket down, is a short length - a foot or so - of dirty white canvas tucked through the rope strands. As this comes off the windlass the bucket (and torch) are thirty, maybe forty feet down the shaft. It’s hard to make out much down there as you’re looking directly into the light. ---
