In Dallas, around 1969, when I was in jr. high, they had us take an in depth written training course on first aid techniques that would come in handy if we survived a massive thermonuclear exchange with the USSR. Along with how to reduce a compound leg fracture with sticks and bath towels and treat sucking chest wounds with Saran Wrap it was recommended to have a bottle of brandy in the aid kit for the treatment of toothache. Any liquor will work, just take a good sip, swish it around the bad tooth, and swallow or spit as you prefer. I survived a year with a broken molar using this technique with a good quality Cien de Agave silver Tequila. Now, on to the treatment for serious radiation burns…
Vodka, Bourbon, Whiskey, Beer, etc… sip it and settle it on the area in your mouth where the pain is. Swallow and repeat till’ eventually you will forget the pain altogether.
The idea is to over stimulate the nerve area with cold or heat. What ever feels like its working for you. Cold Beer or Hot Tea.
Tylenol works REALLY well for me when I have a toothache of jaw pain. Came out OTC just in time-- when I got braces. I developed a need for my one and only root canal on 2nd day Rosh Hashanah last year. Hurt enough that I skipped services to go to the dentist.
They put me on gas. Hardly feel the shot-- or maybe just don’t care-- when you are on nitrous. They turn it up pretty high for me, because I have a history of vomiting during dental work. The gas suppresses my gag reflex.
The doctor offered me a scrip for a single Valium as well, but I turned her down. I can sit in the waiting room for ten minutes, and be fine to drive. Wouldn’t happen on Valium.
All convenience stores have Ibuprofen, Can’t you go there? Man, 12hrs, I would be laying in the floor screaming. Good luck!
Percocet. Sweet, sweet percocet – it stopped the pain cold. (I swear, I’d rather have a migraine than a bad toothache)
In my experiences, an antibiotic that cut down on the infection was the solution. Pain killers alone couldn’t seem to do much to dull the pain.
I can’t promise this would work for you, but when I had a bad wisdom tooth and it was going to be a week before I could get it worked on, what worked for me was brushing my teeth and rinsing with antiseptic mouthwash immediately after ingesting anything but water. It didn’t work immediately, but once the pain subsided after a couple or three hours it didn’t come back unless I strayed from my regimen.
I had the bad luck to get an impacted wisdom tooth in the Soviet Union in 1989. Antibiotics, along with many other basic drugs, were a black-market item at the time. Clove oil was nowhere to be found, and the dental clinic’s recommendation was “rinse it with warm tea 3x/day.” Did I mention tea was being rationed?
Thank god, i have been worried about you.
Good news!
As the dentists say, “The best way to deal with a tooth problem is to address the root of the issue”.
[sub]Actually, I have no idea if dentists say that. But they should.[/sub]
Was there some restriction here on mentioning effective DRUGS? When I get a bad toothache, it’s hydrocodone, man–left over from last bad toothache or a dental procedure.
I’ve never had kidney stones, but my one abscessed tooth made me almost pass out with the pain. Have not experienced anything like it.
Good luck getting a dentist to prescribe that these days. The pendulum has swung rather too far away from them, after years and years of overprescribing the damn things.
My eighteen year old had her wisdom teeth out this past August and the oral surgeon prescribed oxycontin, I want to think 20 pills. She only needed it for 2 days. But, yeah around here you can a prescription for it, if you have a real need. I doubt you could get a long term prescription. When is medical science gonna come up with good pain stuff? I mean, shit it’s 2017! Get to work on that medical researchers!
