I humbly disagree regarding memorability; the Tyree catch was a one in a million that sits alongside Bobby Thomson’s and Kirk Gibson’s home runs in the pantheon of modern sport. It was a spectacular, miraculous play, and one that, imho, has been seen by more people in the past 23 months than Dyson/Fletcher has been seen in nearly 10 years.
The Dyson/Fletcher play was a pretty ordinary play, albeit one that had great significance. As far as significance, I believe that it’s debatable, particularly here in this thread about the top offensive plays of the decade. The Dyson/Fletcher play has more significance as a defensive play.
Top ten defensive plays of the decade (if someone wants to start a thread)?
Mike Brown of the Bears returns an interception in overtime to win the game.
I shouldn’t like this play that much, considering it was against the Browns, but Jamal Lewis’ 2nd TD when he rushed for 295 yards always stood out to me (I think I’ve linked the correct play). He was finishing up a monster day and broke free for the score and he made it into the endzone ahead of his teammates. The camera zoomed out as he chucked the ball up into the stands and gave sort of a pumped-up “THIS IS SPARTA!” flex while the crowd was going nuts. I loved that the camera-man was thoughtful enough to zoom out to show that crowd shot, and that Lewis was so far ahead of his teammates to make it happen in the first place (otherwise they would have mobbed him right away). Lewis looked like a gladiator exhorting the crowd to voice their approval. I get goosebumps thinking about it.
And how about that 2003 season by Lewis? 2,066 yards and 5.3 yards a carry?
I’m not a Rams fan, but I’d nominate these two circus catches by Torry Holt. Bringing in a pass on the second or third try seems so much more impressive than on the first.
Thanks for the tip. This is extremely handy.
Man, those Holt catches are nuts. I don’t even really remember the one against the Giants. Must have repressed it.
Crud.
In two consecutive weeks.
The first one is pretty meh, the second is outstanding.
Guess who had a couple (2:20, 3:25) of crazy catches today.
Maybe only ‘pretty cool’ rather than top-ten-of the decade, and not pivotal or crucial-in-context, but I like the Brady to Moss to the ground to Moss to Brady to (someone else) for I believe a TD, a couple years ago. (Intentional double lateral, with Moss dropping the ball after the first lateral, picking it back up and play continuing as planned)
This doesn’t belong on any top ten lists or anything but the play where Jerome Bettis ran over Brian Urlacher for a TD I think typifies Steeler football. At least it used to.
That would be my submission. The only bad part was that it was in Week 1, and wound up being the highlight of our Super Bowl hangover season.
For me, it was Matthew Stafford throwing the game-winning TD against the Browns this season. It wasn’t spectacular to watch, but he did it with a separated non-throwing shoulder.
It’s also the only significant Lions’ play of the past 10 years!
