A few that haven’t been mentioned yet:

L. Frank Baum’s **Oz** books

Gordon Dickson’s **Childe Cycle**

Fritz Leiber’s **Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser** series

Robert E. Howard’s **Conan** and **Kull** stories

H.P. Lovecraft’s **Cthulhu Mythos** (though he never called it that…)

All of these are very excellent! (except Lemony Snicket Stupid series. LOTS of continuity and logical errors even a child wouldn’t (shouldn’t) forgive. How stupid does “Snicket” think kids are?)
A great reading list! Great thread!

One more to add.
Heechee Saga by Frederick Pohl, especially [Gateway](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/9997414365/ref=pd_sim_books_1/102-3931785-1799307?v=glance&s=books).
Also thoroughly enjoyed OSC’s [Homecoming Series](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/series/-/70/mass_market/ref=pd_dp_series/102-3931785-1799307).

I am fond of Jack Vance’s the [Demon Prince](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0312853025/qid=1055215764/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/002-4241416-7690468?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) series.

And while we’re at it, how about Jack Vance’s [Planet of Adventure](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0312854889/qid=1055216649/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/103-6873013-0471846?v=glance&s=books) series?

They’ve recently released a one volume compendium of the 10 Amber books, which I picked up and quite thoroughly enjoyed.

But,

I started a thread on this very series a while back, explaining why I considered the first volume to be the worst book I’ve ever read, barring L. Ron Hubbard’s excretions. Blech. Read this thread carefully, **Dob** , and go read some REALLY good stuff.
