Top 100 books of the C20th- How many have you read?

19 from the OP’s list.

Not bad for a 20-year-old, I guess.

That list is meant to be a joke right? At first glance it just seems ignorant, unitl you realize how utterly bizarre it is. They can’t be serious when they rank Welsh and flavor-of-the-month Nick Hornsby alongside Joyce and Nabakov? I mean, Stephen freaking King…?!! And where was Pynchon’s GRAVITY’S RAINBOW?

…the Brits and their twisted sense of humor…

Then again, that list isn’t any less bizarre than that notorious Ayn Rand/L. Ron Hubbard list…

Yikes, I’ve read forty one of the books on the Waterstone list. But what a strange list, no rhyme or reason.

  1. Plus some I started but never finished (Ulysses). Plus Lady Chatterly’s Lover, where I only read the, ah, relevant bits.

I’ve read 24 on the Waterstone list.

8 on the board’s list

17 on the reader’s list

16 on the Radcliffe list

From the first list, I can’t believe that All Quiet on the Western Front was number 74. That’s one of the most riviting war novels of all time.

Waterstone’s: 48
Board list: 34
Reader’s list: 43
Radcliffe list: 63

(The Readers list was really strange. Lauren Hamilton? Terri Windling? Not in the same class as Toni Morrison, sorry. But thanks, I’d been trying to remember that I was going to read “Remains of the Day” and could just remember “that really good book by the guy with the Japanese name.”)

See if you can get “James Joyce A-Z” from your interlibrary loan (Facts on File published it, I think). Got it as a review copy. Great guide to ferreting out some of the symbolism in Ulysses.

Also, if your in the mood for a break, try bits of “Dubliners.” I read “The Dead” and saw the wonderful movie. Lovely story.

Oh, for myself, read 24 of them, mostly in college. Some, I must admit, I didn’t finish, like “Lady Chatterly’s Lover.” In defense, I have never read “Horse Whisperer.”

And I thought “Alexandra Quartet” was a quartet of four books, but that’s my nit.

I wonder what a Doper list would look like?

Hmm…Only read 14 of those on the OP’s list.

But I have been meaning to get a couple of the other’s from the library. Whoo-hoo! Library trip tomorrow!

37 from the original list. I’m not proud. Not tired, either…

And most of those under duress to achieve a passing grade in one class or another…
I mean WTF with Stephen King? Classic my ass…

Actually I think most of the ones I had read were children’s books.

An don’t even get me started on the racism in that good ole classic Gone with the Wind…

I would also agree about it being a VERY British list.
Did I miss it or where was Henry James?

There are some serious readers on the board, and no mistake.

cher3 and essvee both with particularly impressive totals on all lists. Some amount of reading, you guys. Well done.

Sorry for posting such a hated list of ‘not-so-classic’ books.

Perhaps we should pool our knowledge and construct our own top 100 list - An SDMB List of Classics we could all aspire to.
I’ll start with adding a vote for 3 unmentioned books:

“The Bone People” by Keri Hulme.
“The Clay Machine Gun” by Victor Pelevin
“Terra Incognita” by Sara Wheeler (ok, so I’m a travel book fanatic)

54 from the Waterstone list

41 from the board list

62 from the readers’ list

53 from the Radcliffe list

I’ve decided I need to get out more. I’m spending much too much time with books.

Waterstone’s - 27
Board’s - 17
Readers’ - 28 (Sheesh, what a lot of Charles de Lint!)

I like that idea!

I vote for:
Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
Kitchen God’s Wife also by Amt Tan

Since I had some extra time on my hands Friday - I went ahead & collated 4 of the lists (Modern Library Board & Readers, Waterstone’s & Radcliffe College) ; I included any book that was on 2+ lists & what its ranking was – see this posting on the UnaBoard.

If we’re making our own list - here’s my suggestion:
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galazy Douglas Adams

My choice would be Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. Can I also second Hitchhiker?

OK, I went and started a new thread for The Dope List of 100 books of the 20th Century.
