Top Chef Season 7 discussion [edited title]

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the chefs worked together. It was nothing like that disaster when they cooked at the farm a few episodes ago.

Kenny was the greatest chef in his own mind.

I always thought this was a case of the emperor with no clothes. Kenny owns his own place and no one had the guts to tell him his food wasn’t great. Facing the TC judges was probably the first honest criticism he’s had since cooking school.

Angelo and Ed sure came through in RW. They practically threw Alex over their shoulders and carried him to the win. Smart strategy. Given a chance Alex would have ruined the teams chances. He couldn’t even prep fish. Tiffany had to redo his work.

I think team 21/21 had a major misfire thinking that they could make the case for someone on the winning side to go home. That just made them look like sore losers in front of the judges. That being said, Alex was very lucky that EVOO won.

I’m glad to see the back of Kenny, who was a legend in his own mind. I love cheese, but that massive lump of fried cheese looked gross. If they’d done smaller strips, I think it would’ve been better.

Okay, I’m gonna say it: Worst season of TC. Ever.

I have to wonder if that bit didn’t decide Kenny’s fate. Of course, they may have been trying to throw us off but it sounded like Kenny at least got points for taking on the leadership role and Amanda’s whole effort was just a big fail.

Is Alex now the most hated contestant ever? All the other chefs seem to hate him with a passion.

I would say that honor still belongs to Marcel Vigneron, if you mean being most-hated by the other contestants. I’d say that the most hated by the viewers would be Ilan Hall, Hosea Rosenberg, or Lisa Fernandes.

Robin from last season has to be high in the running in both categories. I don’t remember much hate for Lisa (though she seemed to skate through on mediocrity), and my recollection is that Hosea wasn’t hated exactly, just undeserving of the title in the eyes of many (including this guy).

In a way I’m glad Kenny is gone. His “legend in his own mind” attitude stopped being amusing a few episodes ago.

I think we’re still two eliminations (Alex and Amanda) away from getting down to the five contestants that actually have a chance to win.

My updated final four: Angelo, Kelly, Ed, and Tiffany, but Kevin could easily sneak in there. I don’t have a clue who is going to win. If I had to put money on it, I guess I’d say Angelo, but I have very little confidence in that pick. He could just as easily not make the final four, I think.

I, too, think that the final four will be Angelo, Kelly, Ed, and Tiffany, and I still think that the contest is Angelo’s to lose. Still, I’ll be rooting for either Tiffany or (gasp) Kelly Liken (yes, she has grown on me these past two episodes).

OMG! They killed Kenny!

I think Kenny is better than Amanda overall, but they always say that the judging is based only on that night, and it sounded like they liked Amanda’s sauce, while they didn’t like anything about what Kenny made. And yes, he took the leadership role, but his team lost.

I thought it was a little cheesy for Amanda to have been exulting that she finally “got a win” in the quickfire, when it was a two-group challenge. Basically she was in the top half.

Kenny just could not keep it remotely simple. It was always way too complicated and I lost count how many times he did “whatever two ways”. IMO overly complicated and often poorly executed or not particularly good in concept or just the final result was just an elimination waiting to happen.

As a person, he didnt seem particularly bad. As a chef he was okay, but not nearly as great as he thought. I wasnt rooting for him to go, but I don’t think him going was a travisty either.

::Slow clap:: Can’t believe I missed that one! :smack:

Hung Hyunh gets my vote for most hated. I certainly disliked him, and I think he was responsible for a lot of the cheating (errr . . . “accidents”) which were so rampant in that season.

I think it really annoyed the judges when Kenny’s team tried to make a case that a chef from the winning team should go home. Talk about grasping at cheese sticks, it doesn’t make a damn if he stood on his head and drooled the entire night…you guys lost!

See now I have an issue with the judge’s blowing that off. If the rule is everyone has to be responsible for a dish and if he wasn’t responsible for conceiving a dish then they shouldn’t get a pass because they won.
Otherwise you’re saying the rules will only be enforced if you lose.

Agreed.

I agree to the extent that the judges need to enforce the rules of the challenge, but I don’t think they ignored the claim. The winning team had specifically said that Alex conceived the lamb dish, so it would be hard for the judges to do anything based on what the losing team said.

It also wouldn’t be the first time in Restaurant Wars that the person up front did little-to-no actual cooking.

Basically, Alex sucks. But as a group, 2121 generally did, too.

And then Alex announced at the table it was Pork Chops?!? I’m not having any trouble finding credence in the claims the losers made.

I noticed Tom looked pretty pissed when the possibility of cheating came up. I don’t know whether he was mad because it could be true or mad because the losing team brought it up. Probably some of both.

Time to go read his blog I guess.

I’ve made stupid mistakes like that when I was nervous - that could just be part of Alex not belonging in the front of the house.

Tom’s blog is posted. His explanation:

“Alex was on the winning team; he wasn’t up for elimination.”
“Not only did we never consider eliminating him for the reason stated above, but also because he did present a dish – he put his name on his dish. We don’t have time in the shooting schedule to halt production and go watch the dailies to see how much of the dish Alex claimed as his he’d actually cooked. He claimed responsibility for that dish.”

I still feel the claims were dismissed too quickly.

Alex needs to GO. I don’t recall hating a contestant this much. He can’t clean a fish or even cook very well. The way he treated the service staff was totally dickish. Ever since his comment early on about buying a hooker and an eight ball of blow I have thought he was an ass and each week he just reinforces it.
