> Speaking as a person who grew up in Oregon and moved to Texas, this perception is absolutely 100% accurate. Texans are excessively proud of their state. I can’t imagine anyone walking around with a tattoo of Oregon on their arms, but I would bet there are probably 1000’s upon 1000’s of Texas tattoos out there. Hell, you can get little texas tanning stickers to wear a the tanning booth.

Is it true that the state’s chief export is belt buckles?

When I grew up in Texas, the Pledge was to the USA Stars and Stripes. I’ve never heard of a Texas flag pledge.

But the indoctrination does begin very early in grade school. It is a fun state to draw. And there are ads, radio and TV, proclaiming that anything from Ford trucks to little chocolate donuts are “Texas Proud”

In the school I was a teacher at for 2 years (a very large High school in the 6th largest school district in Texas, not some podunk town) we pledged allegience to the US flag and the Texas flag, every single day. The state pledge is something like, “I pledge allegiance, to thee Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.”

Indiana’s Hoosiers occasionally try at this but are doomed to fail:
“More Vice-Presidents than any other state!” Really? Veeps, uh, not so wow.
“The Indianapolis 500: The Greatest Spectacle In Racing” And now I hear: “Isn’t that part of NASCAR?”
“Humorists Kurt Vonnegut, David Letterman, Red Skelton and Kin Hubbard”. So, what state doesn’t have humorists? And has anyone outside of Indiana heard of Kin Hubbard?
and nobody even tries to mention Michael Jackson.

Texas.
Allow me to say that again:

No, not Arizona. I’ve been here all my life and don’t recall such behavior.

I think maybe you are thinking of the _dozen Asshole Legislators_ who decided to dump our state’s image and opportunities into the garbage a few years ago.

Texas is the only _State_ I’ve seen a lot of pride about. Everywhere else it’s more regional/city pride. Even with California or New York I don’t know that I ever really hear _California_ or _New York_ pride, but you hear a lot of really prideful people from the five boroughs or from LA or the SF-Bay area. But people from some random town in California I don’t hear a lot of generic “rah rah California” pride, at least not in my experience.

Coloradans seem to be pretty damn smug.

[QUOTE]

Yes but it is more of a born-here-vs-moved-here thing. “Native” bumper stickers are common.

For this contest it is clearly Texas with maybe some others in a battle for a very distant second place.

So, I guess it changed then. I wonder when that started.

I was in Texas schools (as a student) from 1972 to 1981. Moved back to Texas (from L.A., CA to Rusk County) in 3rd grade. Ended up PISD, graduated from South Houston High, sister went to Dobie.

FWIW, I find more of that “Texas!” stuff happening from Dallas area people than from the Houston area. Houston is its own special little place, ya know?

Really? Reeaaally as “bad”? Did you read my post. Are you aware of all the very specifically manufactured Texas stuff? Like the beer signs? And the tanning stickers? Are you saying that if I walked into a tanning shop in South Carolina I would find a sticker in the shape of South Carolina to wear while I’m in the booth? Proportionally, do you think the number of Texas tattoos is the same (percentage of population) as those with South Carolina tattoos? Do places like Dairy Queen and Burger King manufacture specific menus and promotions and advertisments to South Carolina like they do in Texas?

I honestly am asking. I haven’t ever been near South Carolina, but I’ve just never heard of any of that either.

I just looked up tanning stickers. Apparently, it just leaves a pale spot in the desired shape. If Texans really want to show their pride, they should do it the other way around; cover their whole body except for a Texas-shaped cutout that would be the only area exposed to the UV rays. Done consistently, they could get a Texas-shaped tumor. Now that’s some state pride, right there.

Yes, really. They put their state flag (palmetto logo) on every. damn. thing. Cups, cars, hats, belts, pants, tee shirts, dress shirts, polo shirts, dog collars, key chains and a whole shit load of cars. They have them in blue, like the flag. They have them in orange for Clemson. They have them in garnet for the University of South Carolina. They have them in pink. Pick a color and an item. It’s available.
