Ok; this is a “personal experience” list, rather than fitting some objective category:
What song did you encounter, and like, and then were embarrassed (or at least, surprised) to find it was a cover of a much more widely popular version?
I was completely unfamiliar with Janis Joplin, or other iterations. I knew it as a “Faith Hill song.”

Bending the rules here; I didn’t actually like this cover, but thought the original kicked ass when I finally heard it

Then I found out it was an Isley Brothers song. But it wasn’t them either…Then I found out they (the Isleys) had covered The Top Notes.

I liked Whitney Houston’s version. I had no idea it was a Dolly Parton song until a few years after the Whitney Houston song was popular. I rather like Dolly Parton’s 1974 version, I find.

By Antonio Carlos Jobim; the song is Huge in Brazil. It also was a stunner to find out the song’s about Autumn instead of Spring.

I still think their version is solid, but nothing can beat Ringo’s blisters on his fingers.

I had a vague recollection that I’d heard it before, but never heard of the Isley Brothers.
