Infamous songs and why:

  1. Gloomy Sunday - Billie Holiday - Known as the “Hungarian Suicide Song” it was linked to a wave of suicides in the 1930’s. The Billie Holiday cover was banned from the BBC for being “detrimental to war morale”. The ban wasn’t lifted until 2002.
  2. Ebony Eyes, by the Everly Brothers’ Banned voluntarily in 1961 by most stations a few days after release, for overdoing theme of lovers being killed, this time in an airliner crash. Airlines were advertisers.
  3. Better by You, Better than Me - Judas Priest: originally written and recorded by English band Spooky Tooth, the 1978 Judas Priest cover was the subject of a much-publicized “subliminal message trial,” during the 80s’ “Satanic Panic,” alleging that the band’s recording contained hidden messages which were responsible for influencing a pair of young men in Sparks, Nevada, to make a suicide pact in 1985. The case was eventually dismissed.
  4. Helter Skelter - The Beatles - Charles Manson and “The Family” attempted to start a race war he called Helter Skelter,
  5. Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds - The Beatles - LSD, Man
  6. Louie, Louie - Richard Berry and the Pharoahs (originally) - Supposedly obscene lyrics
  7. Puff the Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul and Mary - Everyone knows it’s obviously about pot smoking.
  8. Strange Fruit - Billy Holiday - banned from radio for morbid content
  9. He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss) - The Crystals - Written by Goffin and King and produced by Phil Spector, this song explores abusive relationships and was immediately controversial. Spector ended up pulling the single and Carole King today says she regrets her role in helping to write the song.
