The Animals’ version is from a male point of view, but the traditional version can use both male and female. Not all traditional versions agree on the exact lyrics, but for example, from 1925:

There is a house in New Orleans, it’s called the Rising Sun
It’s been the ruin of many poor girl
Great God, and I for one.

And from 1933:

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
Where many poor boys to destruction has gone
And me, oh God, are one.
