L-L-L-Linda – Jan and Dean
This was actually a cover of a ballad called “Linda”, originally written in 1942 by Jack Lawrence and recorded in 1946 by Ray Noble’s orchestra (vocal by Buddy Clark). The eponymous ‘Linda’ was the one-year-old daughter of Lawrence’s attorney, Lee Eastman – the same Linda Eastman who would, in 1969, marry Beatles member Paul McCartney.
I know this because I have a version of this song from 1947 or so. It was a recording of a live performance for radio from back in the day when radio stations would sometime produce their own shows with local talent – (that’s how the Grand Ole Opry got started, originally it was a one-hour ‘barn dance’ program on Nashville radio station WSM) – with the vocal being performed by my then 20-year-old mother.
