That’s too bad. I started watching the new Doctor Who with the beginning of the current run (Eggleston as The Doctor, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler) and thoroughly enjoy it. You really don’t need to know anything about the previous incarnations of the show to enjoy it - at least I didn’t.
And if you’re such a fan of Torchwood, there are bits and pieces of Doctor Who that adds to it (such as the last season when everyone got together to save the Universe).
Speaking of which, at the end of that Doctor Who show, Jack walks off with Martha and Mickey. They refer to Martha not being available (I think Gwen said, “You better not call her - she’s on her honeymoon”), but no mention of Mickey. Anyone know why isn’t he part of the new Torchwood staff?
I’ve kinda stopped watching Dr Who because every time I tried it was a rerun of a rerun of something I already saw. I am watching Torchwood and loving it. I wondered if it was tied to Dr Who because of the way they mention “The Doctor”. So cool, thanks for catchng me up, y’all
A good second episode in my opinion. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow to see when the aliens apparently will arrive.
One thing that bugged me though- you have an immortal guy you want to kill. You blow him up, and you think that did the trick, but you want to make sure, so you have someone watching the body bag that all his various body parts were put in. But why would you put all his body parts in one bag? I would have shipped parts of him off to Australia and Argentina. Or when I see that he’s reforming, I would have chopped the legs off then. For all I know he would grow them back like a lizard, but I would at least try.
The burying him in concrete, and the rescue and escape on construction equipment was clever, I must give them that. And since the bad guys’ plan did result in Captain Jack naked in handcuffs, I can’t really gripe too much.
Does Barrowman manage to get nekkid every season? I just remember that Doctor Who ep where he was on the robotic WNTW show and dropped trou. I’m sure he couldn’t have gotten through 2 seasons of Torchwood with his pants on
Believe it or not, they actually had a bit of a laugh at some of the fans, I think, by NOT showing Cap’n Jack nekkid until now, despite Barrowman’s avowed willingness to show everything and despite no shortage of other, less attractive, male bums. (I know they showed Rhys in one or two eps, and I think they showed Owen once as well. I haven’t exactly kept track. I think it’s about time they showed a bit more of Gwen, though!)
I’m seriously thinking of renting or buying the DVDs for this one.
It is clear that BBCA is not trimming too much; the shows run 75 minutes per slot.
The jarring interruptions for commercials, not to mention the lower third of the screen advertizing “Torchwood on DVD”, “Doctor Who” and “if you want BBCA in HD, sit closer to the TV” are very distracting.
So Oslo, I’d suggest putting these on your NetFlix queue or borrowing the DVD from a friend. Probably a much more coherent watching experience.
I’m not sure I could watch more than two at one sitting though. I hope the quality keeps up.
ETA: Saw a promo for Primeval during the show. I can’t help thinking that the Torchwood team would go through the ARC crew before the first title.
So who (in the US) is still watching this show? What do you think? Right now, I’ve seen four of the five episodes, with the concluding episode to be shown tonight. It’s presented an interesting dilemma.
An alien species makes contact with Earth (specifically with the British government) and demands that humanity give up ten percent of its children, or else the aliens will destroy humanity. As a sign of their power, the aliens kill everyone in Thames House, the headquarters building of MI-5 and the location of the alien ambassador. And these aliens aren’t cute, non-threatening one, but instead monstrous-looking creatures who breathe an atmosphere that’s immediately poisonous to people. They claim that the children will “live forever” but it’s not clear what their plans are for them.
And note that the DVDs are scheduled to be released on Tuesday, so if you haven’t seen it, you can watch it then.
I’m still watching it. Very powerful story. I’m planning on catching the conclusion tonight.
While I understand why the plot is keeping this between the governments, Torchwood and the 456, seems to me it’s kind of hard to keep The Doctor out of this one - arguably one of the biggest threats that the planet has met, and “Earth’s Protector” is nowhere to be found.
Oh, and Anyone else think this is the last hurrah (final series) for Torchwood, since they’ve killed off yet another core member? Goodbye, Ianto. We were just getting to know you.
Maybe I missed it, but what’s bugging me is they don’t seem to have mentioned what the rest of the world is doing.
The middleman talks to the alien, the alien says they want 10% of the children of the world, but it’s only the prime minister, the American general, the guy from UNIT, and some other British politicians that see it (other than Torchwood of course).
I could see Britain giving over their 10%, and convincing the US and France and some other countries that it would be the best choice out of all the horrible choices, but it seems like it would be extremely difficult, or more likely impossible to convince places like Iraq and China and Somalia and other countries that don’t exactly trust the West to give 10% of their kids over.
I realize it might be addressed tonight, and I don’t expect the show to spend a huge amount of time on the diplomatic relations stuff with the other countries. But it would be nice if there was just a sentence or two mentioned on how they would convince the other countries and the logistics of getting their kids there.
But really, that’s being picky on my part. Overall it’s been pretty great so far in my opinion.
The cast interview after the show gives the appearance that they like having the danger of any character other than Jack being killed off at any given time. Gwen already extended a job offer to Lois.
I’m not sure whether people want open spoilers, since some people have yet to watch the series, so I’ll put everything in a spoiler box.
It seemed like they were going to invite Rupesh Patanjali to join the team to replace Owen Harper as the doctor, until Rupesh was killed off. No idea what the government will do to Lois, given her role as a Torchwood mole in the government meeting.
By the way, that meeting seemed to be similar to the Wannsee Conference. I like the way the ministers kept referring to the children as “units” and decided to concentrate on giving up poor and disadvantaged kids.
I’m also curious whether and how the various countries will agree to give up children.
Yeah but on the other hand virtually anybody can be brought back to life at anytime. The entire first couple seasons seemed like a extended essay on what death means, and how you can sci-fi life after death, with zombie Owen, the Lazarus glove and, of course, Jack.
