We had ~90 seconds of totality then ~20 minutes later the sun went down into the sea as a waxing fat crescent. This was 3-4 miles offshore NE of Ibiza Spain.
Almost perfectly clear skies. Good corona and maybe a couple prominences. May have pix to share later. Busy itinerary today.
I saw what there was to see in south London, mostly using the colander method (insert “straining your eyes” joke here). The light overall is always so weird during an eclipse.
On the other hand, some folks in Spain made the absolute most of the event. The video is well worth watching.
It’s best if there is enough infrastructure to support an influx of tourists in the path of totality. By the time it got to Spain, it was so low in the sky that all of those people needed to find places with a clear, unobstructed view of the western horizon.
The first photographer has the perfect angle.
I saw the eclipse in Segovia, a small city an hour northwest of Madrid. It’s a picturesque town used to getting tourists, including people on day trips from Madrid, and has a good number of hotel rooms as well.
A Canadian family whom we spoke to after the eclipse said that they had tried booking in Barcelona several months ago, but everything there was sold out already. Then, someone told them about Segovia and they were excited to be able to find rooms. In fact I didn’t start looking for a room until mid June and still saw a good number; when I looked again at the end of June, they were almost sold out.
Segovia has medieval walls on a hillside with a good view to the southwest, and that’s where we ended up. It was crowded with both tourists and locals, but not uncomfortably so.
This Google maps street view Google Maps shows the wall where we watched from. When totality came along, the sun was just above the stone tower in the background. It lasted just 59 seconds but was still impressive.
A taxi driver whom we spoke to the next morning said that it had been a crazy busy day for him, and that lots of people had been concerned about finding good viewing spots considering how low on the horizon the sun would be, but he said that after it was over, he hadn’t heard of anyone who had trouble seeing it.
We saw two hot air balloons going up shortly after partiality began. They must have had a great view. And people in houses and apartments on the street overlooking the wall were having viewing parties.
Sorry I can’t post pictures, I have just a few and none of them are uploaded to an image hosting site. Lots of viewers had expensive looking equipment.
Feel free to ask questions if you’re interested.
Reminds me of the skydiver falling thru the sun that Andrew took
It was then I decided I want to go to Egypt next Aug; they hardly get any clouds in Aug so it should be a good opportunity. Anyone else want to join?
