Totally unexpected songs from artists

I always thought that sounded like a song the Meat Puppets would do.

Check out their last album - it’s nothing but Christmas songs. They do a great cover of “Oh Come All Ye Faithful”.

That came on the radio today at work and nobody could identify it. My History of Rock n’ Roll professor, a serious Dylanologist, said it was because he quit smoking right before recording Nashville Skyline, and then immediately resumed.

In the tradition of “Beth” there’s also “Drive” by the Cars.

I was rather taken aback when I first heard Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé sing “Black Hole Sun.”

“Seamus” by Pink Floyd. While they can play dynamite blues when they want, they don’t play that sort of thing on records. The only thing Floyd about it is the dog howling, but musically it’s very different from what they’re known for.

“Sunny Side of Heaven” is an extremely pretty instrumental than nobody would guess was done by Fleetwood Mac. It’s on the Bare Trees album.

Another offbeat instrumental is “East St. Louis Toodle-oo,” the Duke Ellington tribute that Steely Dan did on the Pretzel Logic album.

Some bands recorded interesting disco takes in the late 70s. The aforementioned KISS did “I Was Made For Loving You”. Boz Scaggs weighed in with “Lowdown”.

I don’t have to mention “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”, do I? That one’s a given.

Speaking of KISS, they tapped the light-rock well one other notable time in their “classic” years: “Hard Luck Woman”.

“My Big Ten Inch” by Aerosmith.
