Trader Joe's product reviews

I’m not really a big chip eater at home.

I like Trader Joe’s cereal section. Currently I’m eating and Barbara’s Shredded Wheat and Organic Weetabix (also a Barbara’s product). I eat them with fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or blueberries) from TJ’s produce section. It’s been a while since I’ve had Puffins. I’ll have to get some next time.

You guys should check out Trader Joe’s Fan. I found it on one of my favourite food blogs.

The Revive Spa conditioner is awesome: thin enough to clean with, thick enough to condition, and it smells good to boot. It also contains no silicones. (I don’t use shampoo, so I can’t use products with silicones since most aren’t water-soluble.) It leaves my hair soft and incredibly moisturized.

I’ve found the citrus-scented conditioner (I can’t remember the name) to be significantly less beneficial for my hair.

TJ’s is an awesome store. My big thrill there is that just about every staple is much less expensive than the chain grocers. I have eight or ten favorites there that I’ll make a special trip for. Eggs are cheaper, milk is cheaper, bread is fabulous, cheese is cheaper and has lots of choices. Fruit and veggies are nice quality, I don’t think they’re cheaper though - sometimes.

My current faves include a green can of Hearts of Palm for $2 when at Safeway it’s $4+; they have some really crispy Parmesan Sourdough Chips that are a bit pricey @ $4 but very yummy; TJ’s Garlic Hummus became a HUGE kick in the house, I think we’re winding down, but it’s very tasty with their Garlic Pita Chips. I also like their “Such and Such” which is a snack mix of pignolas, pumpkin seeds and slivered almonds.

There’s just so much to like about this store - I always come home with balloons for the boys and the customer service is great. I’ve NEVER had an issue with CS at TJ’s. And for me, well, that’s saying something because I have high expectations of people who want my money.

The whole store is a “will buy again” for me!

Their dried fruit is wonderful. I especially like the berry mix.

The almond laceys are absolutely addictive. Addictive, I tell you. I think they add crack as a secret ingredient.

In fact, almost all the sweets and dessert-ey things at Trader Joe’s are really, really yummy.

Charles Shaw anyone? Yes, “Two Buck Chuck” is perhaps one of the most overrated wines on Earth, but happiness is a full wine rack and Trader Joe’s let’s that happen on the cheap. They also sell Ponti sweet vermouth which I really like as well.

Cocoa almonds. goes and hugs one of her two remaining boxes

I love their simmer sauces, the mojito and Thai green curry in particular. You can’t ask for an easier dinner. Set your oven to 350, pour the sauce over your favorite poultry or fish, and pop in the oven until done. All you need is a starch and a simple green salad. Divine!

I second the three-ginger cookies  Oh, and the double chocolate chip cookie tub, too…much tastier than the regular chocolate chip.

Others:

– yogurt
– their “mild” morning coffee (I can’t remember its name – it’s a coffee that doesn’t pack quite a punch as most others)
– sliced Pane bread
– chicken sausages (they’re all yummy, but I especially like the mild Italian)
– hummus
– goat cheese
– instant brown rice
– the frozen appetizers like mini tacos, curry sticks, etc. They make a good quick lunch.
– the flash-frozen boneless chicken breasts
– sesame-ginger potato chips

I wish we had more TJ’s around my way. The two closest ones readily accessible by car are both 20 miles away in different directions. I need one within a 5-mile radius of my home. Or 2-mile. Hell, if they built one next door, you’ll know where to find me

My husband handed me a Consumer Reports this morning that ranked TJ’s Just the Clusters Maple Pecan cereal as #2 in their top 16 “healthy” breakfast cereals!

Nothing personal, but I find the idea of someone calling a $2 bottle of wine “overrated” to be hilarious for some reason. I had several bottles of it when it first came out, so I can say without hyperbole that it is the best $2 bottle of wine I’ve ever had, but that’s about it.

While I love many, many Trader Joe’s products, I will review one product in this post, per the request of the OP.

Frozen Chicken Potstickers:

These are very tasty, although we completely disregard the preparation instructions. Here’s how we cook them:

  1. Microwave them for 2-3 minutes until they are somewhere between not frozen and hot.
  2. Heat a bit of oil and a bit of soy sauce in a skillet on medium high. Cook the potstickers in the pan until they are lightly browned on all sides. Be careful not to use too much oil.
  3. Eat them. I recommend dipping them in soy sauce. Yummy.

Haven’t been to a TJ’s in quite awhile, but they have a generic cheesecake in the frozen food section - comes in like a pizza box and just says, “Cheesecake” on it.

All you have to do is thaw it out. Tastes as good as any you would find in a nice Jewish deli in NYC.

Another voice in the “two buck Chuck” debate. We had a thread on here in the last year about Charles Shaw wines, and the answer was(I believe) that they use whatever is leftovers in Calif. So, while the wine years ago, when there was a huge surplus, tended to be a great, tasty bargain, now that the surpluses are gone the wines have come back to earth and are nowhere near as good and vary tremendously from batch to batch.

I’ll second the pot stickers. They’re great, especially with the microwave brown rice mentioned above.

The orange chicken is also great, and I eat it at least once a week. And don’t forget Tito’s vodka! It’s not a TJ’s product per se, but they do sell it.

According to Snopes, that’s not true.

Also, the prepackaged carrot cake is delicious.

Two things:

Cheese canneloni. A very cheap, self-contained decent meal. Just microwave it and eat it right out of the tin, and it’s only about $1.29.

Chicken Caesar Salad. It comes with all the essentials: lettuce, cheese, croutons, chicken, dressing, even a fork!

I also sometimes buy their big blocks of chocolate which you’re supposed to cook with but I instead just nibble on a little each day.

No, no, you’re right. It’s cheaper than Richards Wild Irish Rose and doesn’t cause nearly as many stabbings (no cite  ). I find it overrated like Samclem is getting at. There’s still many people I encounter that are thrilled and buy it by the case and proclaim it the new Chateau Lafite and guzzle it by the bottle. Yes, it’s the best $2 (or $3 or $4 depending on the liqour taxes where you shop) bottle I’ve ever had, but it’s really not all that great. It does somehow manage to be, at minimal cost, totally overated. Passible at best, overly tannic and sour at it’s usual.

Getting a boner just thinking about their chocolate covered dried cherries (the large maroon ones, not the little ones, which are just okay).

Creamy Corn and Roasted Pepper Soup. Yum…

My point was that the wine packaged under the Charles Shaw lable and sold in the last year or so, is distinctively inferior to the stuff you could get 3-5 years ago, when the wine glut was on in CA. The snopes article was written in 2003, and based on info from 2002.

But your point and snopes’ point was well taken. Certainly it’s made from Central Valley, inferior, grapes.

39 posts and no one has mentioned their peanut butter yet???

I go there specifically for the PB. Drive 20 mins to the store, pop in and get 8 jars or so and return again in a few months. Sometimes I re-sell my jars to family members who have tasted it and want some for home.

$2 for a jar. Peanuts and salt (or no salt!) Half the cost of grocery store organic PB. No trans-fats. No sugar. I can’t hardly stand Jif anymore…
I also like their soy and flax tortilla chipps. Nummy and full of omega 3’s!
