Eyebrows-Thought of that too! IIRC a 9/11 survivor died in that crash.

Not exactly an overshadow as the quake had extensive media coverage for two months. However, all media and government assistance shifted to the subway attacks in Tokyo. There was a lot of resentment from citizens of the Hanshin area.

Ansett, Australia’s second biggest airline chose to declare bankruptcy on September 11th, 2001 and people barely noticed until way after that it even happened.

It was a bit eerie to run across the website one of the victims had made for his tattoo business. Kind of surprised it would still be online after over 10 years.
The New Zealand earthquake in February 2011 killed 185 people and flattened large parts of Christchurch, including its historic cathedral.
Then less than three weeks later it got totally overshadowed by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
