[Here](http://www.themoviebox.net/trailers/thepassion/thepassion_tr_lo.htm) is the trailer for Mel Gibson’s movie, _Passion_ about the last 12 hours in the life of Christ. It’s all in Aramaic and Latin.

I notice in the trailer that Pilate says “Ecce Homo” but pronounces it as “Et-chay Omo.” I had three years of Classical Latin in college and from what I know it should be pronounced "Ek-kay homo. Is this a mispronunciation or a different dialect (Vulgate, perhaps?) Does anybody know?

The trailer also shows Jesus on the cross shouting “Eloi, Eloi” which is from Mark, but I thought this was supposed to be based on John. (“Ecce homo” is from John)

Anyway it looks pretty good. It’s kind of bloody though, so beware if you don’t like to see your Saviours flayed.

I doubt Mel Gibson will be able to top The Last Temptation of Christ but I’m still willing to check the movie out and keep an open mind. The trailer was pretty good by the way so let’s hope the movie will be too.

Shit, I’ve been on the fence about this one until now, but that movie just shot to the top of my “Must See” list. Trailer gave me literal goosebumps.

I am fairly excited about it actually. I think this is a very bold move on Mr. Gibson’s part.

And I got goosebumps, too. That alone makes it a must see.

I think it’s a bold move too, and you’ve got to respect the fact that he’s throwing his whole heart into what is really a pretty anti-commercial vision. I can’t wait to see this.

Etch-ay and many other variances are just church-Latin. C’s and g’s are soft, t’s get an s-sound sometimes – “grat-si-as ah-ji-mus” for _gratias agimus_, etc. I’ve always thought it sounded much nicer than the Classical pronunciation.

I think I will see this movie.

Thanks, **masonite**. I know Mel is big on Church Latin so that’s probably why he used that pronunciation.

This is going to be a treat for us Latin geeks, huh. 🙂

_Certe, amicus meus. Hanc peliculam videbo, sed cogito Judaei illam oderint._. Mind you, I didn’t consult my Latin grammar book, so I may well have gotten it wrong.

It definitely looks interesting, although I am willing to bet that Gibson is going to revive the “Jews killed Christ” business, given his upbringing and peculiarly conservative Tridentine views.

</div>

It’s not going to be a treat for this Latin geek. The phonology of Latin (both classical and vulgar) is well known. So called Church-Latin is not what Pilate et al spoke. I was already pissed at the inattention to historical inaccuracy with the lack of Koine Greek (it would have been used between the Jews and Roman officials), this just makes the movie seem even more shoddy. As a Christian, I don’t think Jesus would like making a movie about his death with a bunch of details wrong due to laziness.

Makes you wonder what he thought of _The Greatest Story Ever Told_.

I heard he did a screening for a test group and they said the subtitles did not distract from the movie, so I think he’s going to put them in.

I noticed that about the palms too. I thought Unca Cecil did a column on that?

That’s true. The one crucifixion victim whose remains have ever been recovered had the nails through the wrists. You’d think Gibson would know that or someone would have told him (same with the Latin pronunciation) but I suppose he’s going for a pure rendering of the text rather than historical accuracy.

As for **UnoMondo’s** point about Greek. This would only come into play during conversations between Romans and Jews (Romans would speak Latin amongst themselves, Jews would speak Aramaic or Hebrew). In the Gospel of John this is most pertinent in the scenes with Pontius Pilate and it’s a legitimate issue. If he addresses Jesus and the high priests in Latin they won’t understand him but as a Roman he probably didn’t know Aramaic. Maybe they could resolve it with an interpreter but it would be more accurate if they spoke Greek. I would also prefer the Classical pronunciation of Latin.

I’m stilll willing to give the film a chance, though.

I think the movie will be vastly improved if they cast John Cleese as a centurion. “A people called the Romanes, they go the house?”
