OK, OK. My tongue was a bit in my cheek when I posted the comment (and the one before it), and yes, there are various sense of ‘race’ - there are also various misunderstandings of those various senses too. Whatever.
Sorry for being a bit snarky. I was just surprised at you making such a comment, since I assumed you would have been familiar with the issue. But if you know the distinction, it might be better to allow the newbies to jump in with such remarks, as they inevitably do.
Sorry for biting back. It is Friday, and I have been drinking, at work (company subsidised alcohol! Yay!)
Ah, that explains it then. Cheers!
And may I add, the Kingdom of Butter sounds like a pretty cool place if they give you free booze at work.
Biologists will tell you that there is close genetic affinity between people in the same ethnic group, of which there are literally hundreds around the globe. If you speak of genetics in those terms, there’s no problem. But trying to lump people into 4 or 5 “races” that correspond to geographic continents is problematic to say the least. And as human populations become more mobile, even those traditional ethnic groups lose their meanings. Whites and Blacks in the US especially tend to be fairly far removed from their ancestors’ homelands, so talking about a “White race” and a “Black race” in the US doesn’t make much sense except as a social construct. Halle Berry and Tiger Woods are called Black, but they both have more non-African genetic ancestry than they do African.
It’s twue! It’s twue!
Sorry, just had to say that. Couldn’t help myself.
This is so frustrating. I saw this post and remembered something kinda unrelated… but related. But I am coming up with nothing for cites.
I saw a Discovery Channel special on chimerism where a baby was born and was literally split down the middle being black and white. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen the photographs themselves on the program. Basically the baby was born with two sets of DNA and was born with both pigments. The closest thing to a cite is this, which you can take or leave.
Any existence of this show has been erased from existence online. No hits on Discovery dot come, no hits on Amazon dot com. And nothing on the boards here in regards to “am my own twin” or “chimerism”. Maybe my next post will ask, “Why the heck is everyone here a physics nut but never any genetics?”
