Travel Tips for Eastern Wyoming?

Oh, and, can’t believe I’ve forgotten this. In Cody, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center is a must-see. It’s five museums in one. There’s the Buffalo Bill museum (B. B. Cody memorabilia), the Winchester firearms collection, the Remington Museum of Western Art, the Plains Indian Museum, and the brand-new Draper Museum of Natural History. You could easily spend a day there and still not do it justice. Hit the link and see what I mean.

More corrections. It seems I can’t make a post in this thread without an error in it.

There are actually three roads east out of Cody. To go past the Medicine Wheel and the most scenic route over the Bighorns, you’d have to take the northernmost one, US 14-Alt, through Powell. It meets with US 14 on top of the Bighorns, and from there goes down to Sheridan. This route goes past the ruins of the Heart Mountain WWII relocation camp, if you want to relive a sadder chapter in our country’s history.

And the name of the place in Rawlins is Rose’s Lariat, Not Rose’s Cantina.

Rose’s Cantina is in El Paso. Good-looking Mexican gal used to work there, name of Feleena or something like that. One day this cowboy comes in and starts hittin’ on Feleena. That’s when all the trouble started …

::insert red-faced, embarassed smiley here::

I had to go to Cody today for a meeting. It was snowing - two days before the Memorial Day weekend. Springtime in Wyoming, you gotta love it!

My challenge was answered! In less than a heartbeat, the handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor!

…Thanks again for all the help; I’ve got the Rand McNally out and am tracing all the various routes.

Next question. Should I get me one of those spiffy mail-order cowboy outfits, so I blend in with the locals?

Oh, yeah! Three-foot tall white hat, big red bandanna, plaid Western-cut shirt with pearl snaps, big furry chaps, and spurs on your boots! We wear that kind of stuff all the time!

And be sure to take that southern route over the Bighorns, so I can take ya’ over the the bar for a quick one!

“I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy …”

:smiley:

What’s even more funny, Uke, is that out here there are definitely people who dress in the “upscale cowboy” mode. Mr. Athena’s business partner is one. Bolo ties, antique military type shirts, and granny glasses on chains are not uncommon looks for him. He has enough cowboy hats to outfit a round-up. And don’t forget the antique pistols.

Also of note is the Southwest Goddess look. Brightly colored flowing clothing with vaguely Spanish or Indian patterns, coupled with gaudy turquoise jewerly is in vogue.

I’ve noticed that you enjoy the culinary arts, Ike, so I suggest a short side trip to Severance, CO, just a couple of miles off I25 near Fort Collins to Bruce’s Bar, well known for a certain local delicacy. Great art, too, as you can see if you look closely at the picture in this link:

Sorry about that link. You have to click on “Severance”.

Only on the Straight Dope could a thread about tourism sites in Wyoming get hijacked into a Marty Robbins songfest!
