> Seems to me, though, that in DS9 Earth was once or twice referred to as “paradise” perhaps by Sisko’s father.

It was Sisko himself who called Earth a paradise. “On Earth this is no poverty, no crime, no war,” he said. “Look out the window at Starfleet Command, and you’re looking at paradise. And it’s easy to be a saint in paradise.”

Beverly Crusher once espoused a similar sentiment.

> Let’s say that instead of kids on board we have a completely separate module that is warp capable and follows Enterprise D at a discreet distance. It would house the kiddies, youth, and non-assigned spouses.
>
> It would have no weapons to intimidate or provoke an attacking force in the event that such even became aware of it. And anyway, it would scoot away at the first sign of danger, while raising state-of-the-art shields. It would not make much of a target for any enemy, even a vicious one. Why waste energy and add further risk to yourself by chasing after a very fast and well-shielded vessel with no offensive weaponry?
>
> Okay, maybe not a perfect solution, but surely more sensible that what we had in the later series.

One word: hostages.

Second word: extortion.

> The scene I’m specifically thinking of might have been in Court Martial, maybe. Kirk goes to a starbase bar, and talks to some other captains. I think they’re giving him shit for killing Ben Finney, if it was in Court Martial. Of the group present, Kirk had the longest hair. The other captains all looked like they’d be quite happy busting some hippies’ heads. No one cared for Kirk’s version. Not an ounce of compassion present, just conservatism as far as the eye could see. 🙂

Then there are the fellow captains with Christopher Pike in the dancing Orion slave girl scene in the first pilot. Not only Teamsters but Teamsters who go to strip clubs.

That dance, by the way, was taken from a “Have Gun Will Travel” episode, as I discovered when watching all of them.

> Well, the second O’brien kid was teleported out of Keiko’s womb, but just to move him into Kira’s womb following an accident that meant Keiko couldn’t carry him to term. Apparently they never bothered improving incubator technology (nor came up with some sort of artificial womb) for premies in the span of several hundred years.

> That or they just had to somehow account for Nina Visitor getting knocked up by Siddig without making Kira a mother.

I’m not sure we can make that assumption. The original transfer happened on a shuttle with access to limited equipment, and they claimed it was too dangerous to move the fetus again, due to some weird quirk of Bajoran anatomy. (Blood vessels forming a tight bond with the fetus.)

I only bring it up because, if you were right, it would put a damper in my response in the [Star Trek gay parents thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=755131). So I’d already considered this episode.

Yes, I was trying to remember if Sisko himself said that. Wasn’t it while speaking to his father?

As I said, not a perfect solution. But let’s consider scenarios.

First, they have to be aware that such an associated vessel exists. Then they have to be able to find it. They may be able to close in on it, but only if they are faster. They may find the shields not much of a problem, or even child’s play (unintentional wordplay!), but only if they are more advanced than the Feds in offense over defense.

What’s that you say? To make it nonthreatening as a target I have it with no offensive weapons, and that makes it more vulnerable. They only have the shields to protect an approaching hostile. Yes, but while they would be difficult to locate for a hostile the starship would be keeping close tabs on them. They would be a discreet distance away, but not so far that the starship could not rush to the defense. And meanwhile there would be those tricky maneuvers that were so great at trivializing defensive moves, especially in DS9!

My fanwank is that Starfleet went so long since they faced a serious threat(Klingon war?) that they got lax. I’d HOPE that the borg encounter at wolf 359? changed this policy about kiddies on board.
