Trekkies: What the Hell is wrong with the Enterprise

It was Sisko himself who called Earth a paradise. “On Earth this is no poverty, no crime, no war,” he said. “Look out the window at Starfleet Command, and you’re looking at paradise. And it’s easy to be a saint in paradise.”

Beverly Crusher once espoused a similar sentiment.

One word: hostages.

Second word: extortion.

Then there are the fellow captains with Christopher Pike in the dancing Orion slave girl scene in the first pilot. Not only Teamsters but Teamsters who go to strip clubs.

That dance, by the way, was taken from a “Have Gun Will Travel” episode, as I discovered when watching all of them.

I’m not sure we can make that assumption. The original transfer happened on a shuttle with access to limited equipment, and they claimed it was too dangerous to move the fetus again, due to some weird quirk of Bajoran anatomy. (Blood vessels forming a tight bond with the fetus.)

I only bring it up because, if you were right, it would put a damper in my response in the Star Trek gay parents thread. So I’d already considered this episode.

Yes, I was trying to remember if Sisko himself said that. Wasn’t it while speaking to his father?

As I said, not a perfect solution. But let’s consider scenarios.

First, they have to be aware that such an associated vessel exists. Then they have to be able to find it. They may be able to close in on it, but only if they are faster. They may find the shields not much of a problem, or even child’s play (unintentional wordplay!), but only if they are more advanced than the Feds in offense over defense.

What’s that you say? To make it nonthreatening as a target I have it with no offensive weapons, and that makes it more vulnerable. They only have the shields to protect an approaching hostile. Yes, but while they would be difficult to locate for a hostile the starship would be keeping close tabs on them. They would be a discreet distance away, but not so far that the starship could not rush to the defense. And meanwhile there would be those tricky maneuvers that were so great at trivializing defensive moves, especially in DS9!

My fanwank is that Starfleet went so long since they faced a serious threat(Klingon war?) that they got lax. I’d HOPE that the borg encounter at wolf 359? changed this policy about kiddies on board.
