I continue to wish that all newspeople could be placed in the stocks and pelted with rotten vegetables, until they permanently renounce use of the phrases “on the ground” ("the situation on the ground in Syria blah blah blah) and “all eyes on \_” (headline: “All Eyes On Jordan Spieth”).

Throw that phraseology under the bus, please.

Even though I use it, I think “under the bus” should be thrown guess where?

I’m probably duplicating past entries here, but… what-evs (that’s my first. I hate the dismissive “whatever” bad enough already, but that variation makes me extra stabby.)

“Gift” used as a verb. You don’t donation money to the Red Cross or payment your electric bill.

“We’re pregnant.” No, you’re not, unless you’re both women and both of your are pregnant.

One that I thankfully won’t hear much now that warmer weather has theoretically arrived is “cocooning,” in the sense of “bundling up with heavy clothes so as not to freeze to death.” I watch a lot of QVC and I swear every fashion show during fall and winter had someone say, “the weather is getting cold; we’re cocooning” and I felt like throwing my TV out the window every time I heard it.

“Jelly” used instead of “jealous."

Using “You do know that [fact obvious to everyone, you stupid wanker], right?” to score points in an argument.

For some people, any person whom they dislike is a “douchebag." I don’t mind the term so much, just the frequency.

“Storyline” when used in professional sports. I guess this means factors that affect each team’s ability to win, but football isn’t professional wrestling. There is no kayfabe or scripting involved. Players get hurt, teams are strong in certain positions and lacking in others, and so forth. But those aren’t storylines. They’re factors.

No, that’s not what it means. It doesn’t refer to any kind of scripting, but it is a story, a narrative of past events and the anticipation of things possibly to come. It’s more than strict on-field factors, as player, coach, city and fan personalities and memes can come into it.

I back \*\*MsRobyn \*\*fully in this.

When pro sports changed from a competition to a soap opera about the players and a serial novel about the teams as protagonists they totally lost my interest in the yak yak.

I still watch and enjoy the games, but spare me your tiresome patter you loathsome ESPNers.

I always thought it was a bastardization of “en pointe”, where one is up on their toes in ballet. Of course it’s a pretty loose connection between that and the “on point” context, but hey - _whatevs_.
XD

It’s standard legit legal jargon. And very far from meaningless.

Now it has somehow escaped into corporate-speak. Probably due to all the cop & prosecutor adulation shows on TV. And you’re right: that’s not so good.

A couple years ago “huddle” arrived in my workplace. Meetings changed to huddles - The Weekly X Project Huddle - and emails advised that the team needed to huddle that afternoon. We’re moving to a new facility in June and there will be several glass-walled rooms labeled “Huddle” and “Think”. “Think” will be a tiny room where one or two people can go to, I guess, think, since we will have a “open concept” office which is apparently not conducive to that. I hope it will be easy to re-paint the names when the next set of buzzwords take over. :smack:

We already have glass cages called “huddles” although we had never used that term otherwise.

Good thing the rooms called “huddles” have glass walls. If they had solid walls they might be more used for “cuddles”. Perhaps some minor [del]vandalism[/del] customization of the signage is in order? 🙂
