That’s interesting. I’m still not sure how Jon Stewart found him. Hopefully Trevor finds as good a successor. I fell out of the habit of watching the Daily Show, but Trevor did a good job replacing a living legend. ---

I think Hasan Minhaj would be a good choice. He has Daily Show lineage and I thought _Patriot Act_ was great. ---

My wife and I went to the Montreal Just for Laughs festival in, I think, 2013. We saw a bunch of mostly-young terrific comedians like Bo Burnham and John Mulaney, and others that would become well-known. We also took in somebody we had never heard of but who online had received [good reviews](https://www.brooklynvegan.com/south-african-c/) for his “Born a Crime” show. Trevor Noah, of course. I walked out saying that he was going to be a global star. Never had that response to anyone else in my life. When everyone else was hating on him in 2015 I was going “I told you so.” In the end I think he was somewhat limited in the role. He started by being an outsider amazed by America’s weirdness but got squashed into being an American with American memories put into his mouth by the writers so the audience could relate. They never sounded real from someone with his background. TDS probably won’t end because it’s too much of an institution. No straight white man can possibly take it over in our real world of 2022 and I think the run of non-American-born late-night hosts is also over. That leaves a mountain of possibilities, most of which I wouldn’t have heard of anymore than I would have heard of Noah other than my serendipitous encounter. I wish whoever luck. They’ll need it. ---

I loved Jon Stewart while he was doing The Daily Show. It took time for me to appreciate Trevor Noah, but in the end he was a very worthy successor. I am sorry to hear he is moving on even though I no longer watch the show very often. Noah was funny, worldly, witty and well-informed. I enjoyed his perspective on things, such as his travels to Scotland. I don’t know who would be good. I presume Colbert and Oliver are not interested, and many other Daily alumni are far less funny to me. Jim Jeffries might be interesting, but seems an unlikely choice. Vir Das or Russell Peters are political but too South Asian oriented? You’d think a candidate would have to have both some American and global political interest yet be detached, be a good interviewer and be cool and interesting enough to attract viewers. That’s a challenging mix. The best choice is probably someone I do not know. Rick Mercer or Russell Peters might be too Canadian or long in the tooth? Michelle Wolf too partisan? I think Jimmy Carr would be a good choice. ---

I’d love to see them hand over the keys to Jordan Klepper. His “Finger on the Pulse” bits where he interviews moronic batshit-crazy trumpers is must-see TV. ---

Carr, no. But I could see some of the topical news comedians from the UK trying the role. Since I agree a straight white man would be a bad choice, my first though was Nish Kumar, who has had/has a satirical news show. But there are plenty of others. ---

_The Daily Show_ was an institution created almost single-handedly by Jon Stewart. He _ **was** _ _The Daily Show_. I’ve watched very little of it since Stewart left, believing – correctly, as it turned out – that no one could replace him. I enjoy John Oliver’s show and Bill Maher, but what those guys do weekly with lots of breaks – Oliver typically airs just 30 shows per year – is more or less what Stewart did every single day. The pressure and stress to maintain the quality that Stewart managed to do must have been enormous. ---

What a disgustingly and casually bigoted view to have. I fail to see why someone’s sex, race or sexuality should stop them taking a job, funny is funny, but in any case I find Nish Kumar a total humour vaccuum. Full of “satirical” points that people are expected to agree with rather than actually find funny. I’ve watched his career for years and he shines in the same way that a polished turd does, there has to be a better option. ---

You really need someone who excels at self-deprecating humor (as Stewart and Noah do) to make the show work. The moment it starts to be a “sneering down” show rather than an “everything is ridiculous” show, it fails. Charlie Brooker would be an obvious choice but I don’t think he would want the job or the pressure that come with it. Despite his ability to absolutely skewer every aspect of modern society and current events, my impression is that he much prefers the writing part of his job to the presenting part, and a daily show would wring him dry very quickly. Kate McKinnon is an intriguing choice. Would she do it? Is she low-key enough to do it? God knows she’s funny and talented but I’m not sure she could dial it back enough. But I could be wrong. Nish Kumar? Eh. I like his standup, but I found The Mash Report utterly unengaging, with Kumar and Parris and Taylor laughing more at their jokes than the audience were (and I likewise consider Parris and Taylor to be otherwise talented comedians). Jimmy Carr? Oh hell no. Definitely not a good fit for TDS. How do we feel about Michelle Wolf? She’s sharp, funny and has a history with the show. Could work. But her Netflix series didn’t draw huge audiences so who knows. I suspect the eventual replacement will be like Noah - some clever observational comic on the fringes of fame whose name will not spring to mind immediately but who will suit the temperament of the show. ---

Nothing against Noah, but I never connected with his style of comedy. It often felt to me that he was trying too hard. Whoever follows, I hope they dial the theatrics down a notch or two. mmm ---
