Franklin Delano Roosevelt, elected to the presidency four times, had three different running-mates as vice-presidential candidates. John Nance Garner was elected VP in the 1932 and 1936 elections, while Henry A. Wallace was on the ticket in the 1940 election. Harry S. Truman, a Missourian who was first elected to the Senate in 1934, became FDR’s running-mate in the 1944 election and assumed the presidency following the death of FDR in 1945.

Although FDR was easily re-nominated in 1944, there was a major fight over the vice-presidential nomination, particularly in light of rumours over FDR’s health. The centrist-right members of the party thought Wallace as too leftist. A strong group emerged that fought for Truman to be nominated, leading to a contested ballot, which Truman eventually won.

One of the leaders of the group who opposed Wallace, Senator Samuel Jackson, later said that he thought his tombstone should be inscribed: “Here lies the man who stopped Henry Wallace from becoming President of the United States.”

Actor Samuel L. Jackson is a stutterer, and he discovered that cursing – in particular, using the curse “motherf\*\*\*er,” with which he has become strongly identified – was a way that he could control his stuttering. As [a 2019 _Vanity Fair_ article notes](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/06/samuel-l-jackson-shaft-motherfucker-stutter):

> [@](#):
>
> “I stuttered for a long time, and it actually did help me stop. The word gave me something to focus on and released the pressure, and it really helped me get the rest of the sentence out,” said the 70-year-old Oscar nominee. “I’m not real sure why, but it’s easy for me to pronounce. It was spontaneous on how I discovered it—it was the word that hit me, and the word that kind of helped me stop stuttering with the d-d-d’s and b-b-b’s.”

> [@](#):
>
> As an adult, Jackson still stutters sporadically, and continues to shout “motherfucker” or whisper it to stop his broken speech. “The word still helps me today,” he said. “I still stutter a little bit. I have days and I get through it.”
