The Scott Paper Company, founded in Philadelphia in 1879, is credited as being the first company to sell toilet paper in rolls, when they introduced the Waldorf brand of toilet paper in 1890.

Scott was purchased by Kimberly-Clark in 1995, which still makes the Scott brand of toilet paper.

Kimberly-Clark was founded in 1872 by John A. Kimberly, Havilah Babcock, Charles B. Clark and Franklyn C. Shattuck in Neenah, Wisconsin. The company’s first business was operating paper mills. Today it is a world-wide enterprise offering a variety of different products. The total assets of the company were estimated last year to be over 17 billion dollars.

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Inc., also known as Babcock & Wilcox, is an American renewable, environmental and thermal energy technologies and service provider that is active and has operations in many international markets across the globe. The company was founded in 1867 by Stephen Wilcox and his partner George Herman Babcock with the intention of building safer steam boilers.

The nuclear reactor which malfunctioned and partially melted down at Three Mile Island in Londonderry Twp., Penna. in March 1979 was built by Babcock & Wilcox. President Jimmy Carter, a former Navy nuclear specialist, personally visited the site. Eventual cleanup costs from the accident were about $1 billion.

Jimmy Carter’s great-grandfather (on his mother, Lillian Gordy Carter’s, side), James Gordy, was also the great-grandfather of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr.

Jean, Duc de Berry, was a notable art patron and collector. His lavish spending on his art collection meant that he was deeply in debt when he died in 1416 at Paris. He is best remembered for the illuminated Book of Hours known as the _Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry_. Using rare and costly pigments and gold, and with an unusually large number of illustrations, the book is one of the most lavish late medieval illuminated manuscripts.

The Ariel Castro kidnappings took place between 2002 and 2004, when Ariel Castro kidnapped Michelle Knight, Amanda **Berry** , and Georgina “Gina” DeJesus and held them captive in his home in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The three girls were imprisoned until May 6, 2013, when Berry escaped with her six-year-old daughter, to whom she had given birth while imprisoned, and contacted the police, who rescued Knight and DeJesus and arrested Castro within hours.

On May 13 of this year, Gina DeJesus was a victim of a carjacking on a Cleveland street. While driving alone, she was forced to stop her car and then ordered out of her vehicle at gunpoint. The suspects took her car, along with her purse, credit cards, and other personal items. Police believe that she was a victim of a random attack, rather than being singled out because of who she is.

May 13, 1861 was the beginning of the end for the Confederate States of America. Counting on the United Kingdom as an ally, on that date the UK declared that while they recognized the right of the CSA to conduct war, the UK would stay neutral in the Civil War.

Benito Mussolini was summarily executed on April 28, 1945, along with his mistress.

The bodies were then taken to Milan and dumped on Piazzale Loreto, the site of the summary execution of several partisans the year before. The bodies were abused by the crowd until they were evenually suspended, half-naked and upside down, from a metal girder.

Alessandra Mussolini is the granddaughter of former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, and is also the niece of Italian actress Sophia Loren.

As a young woman, Alessandra was an actress, model and singer, before moving into politics. She served in both houses of the Italian Parliament, as well as in the European Parliament.

Two Prime Ministers of Canada served while in the upper house of Parliament, the Senate: Sir John Abbott and Sir Mackenzie Bowell.

Neither had particularly distinguished terms, with Abbott retiring after 18 months, suffering from a soon to be fatal brain cancer, and Bowell being forced out by a Cabinet revolt led by Charles Hibbert Tupper.

Bowell was succeeded as PM by Sir Charles Tupper, coincidentally the father of Charles Hibbert Tupper.

Earl Silas Tupper was an American businessman and inventor, best known as the inventor of Tupperware, an airtight plastic container for storing food, and for founding the related home products company that bears his name. In 1958, Tupper sold The Tupperware Company for $16 million to Rexall. Shortly afterward, he divorced his wife, gave up his U.S. citizenship to avoid taxes, and bought an island just off the coast of Costa Rica, where he lived until his death in 1983

Although Earl Tupper developed the Tupperware product and patented the ‘burping’ seal, much of the company’s success can be attributed to a woman named Bonnie Wise. On her own, she developed the idea of the ‘Tupperware Party’ and her network of dealers and sellers soon outsold the Tupperware stores. Tupper quickly made Wise Director of Marketing and soon sales of Tupperware products exploded.

Earl Tupper’s notebooks with his product ideas have been digitized and are stored at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Leonardo da Vinci kept notes and drawings of his studies, ideas and inventions. Over 7,000 pages have survived, including a notebook known as Codex Arundel after its English collector Thomas Howard, 14th earl of Arundel. It has been fully digitized by the British Library and is viewable onlline.

Anne Arundel County is a county in the state of Maryland, and contains the city of Annapolis. The county was named after Lady Anne Arundell, member of the Arundell family of Cornwall, and wife of Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, who was founder of the Province of Maryland.

The first US President to attend a graduation at the US Naval Academy (in Annapolis) did not give a speech. That was US Grant.

Robert A. Heinlein was a graduate of the US Naval Academy (class of 1929) and rose to the rank of Lieutenant before having to leave the service in 1934 due to pulmonary tuberculosis. He then went on to a writing career that many people noticed and remarked upon.
