John A. Winslow of North Carolina, a serving U.S. Navy officer, remained loyal to the United States when his state seceded at the outbreak of the Civil War. He later commanded the USS _Kearsarge_ in one of the first battles on the high seas between steamships, defeating the notorious Confederate commerce raider CSS _Alabama_ off the coast of Cherbourg, France on June 19, 1864. The _Alabama_ was commanded by Capt. Raphael Semmes, who escaped on a nearby British yacht which had been observing the battle.

In the cuisine of Normandy, _Demoiselles de Cherbourg_ are not young women of Cherbourg, as a literal translation might indicate. They are small lobsters, cooked in broth and sometimes served “à la nage”, “in the swim” in broth with cream or butter.

Not in play: being female, wouldn’t she be the Duchess of Normandy?

In play: Queen Elizabeth II holds the record for the longest-lived monarch in English/British history. Although her formal coronation wasn’t until June of 1953, she acceded to the throne and was the _de facto_ Queen upon the death of her father (George VI) on February 6, 1952 , so as of today – 11/17/2021 – she has reigned for 25,487 days … or 69 years, 284 days _(and still counting)_.

During this same time frame, a total of 14 different men have held the office of President of the United States – Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, Trump, and current POTUS Joseph Biden.

Fascinating, BB!

Obama’s Presidential Library will be located in Chicago, in Jackson Park. Construction began three months ago.
Trump’s Presidential Library was launched on January 20, 2021, his last day in office. Its location is still TBD, although some sources say it will be in Florida.

Harris W. Fawell, who passed away last week as a result of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease, served as a U.S. Congressman from 1985 to 1999, representing Chicago’s western suburbs.

In 2008, despite the fact that he was a Republican, Fawell endorsed fellow Illinoisan, Democrat Barack Obama, in the race for U.S. President, over his own party’s nominee, John McCain.

(Mr. Fawell was also a member of my church. Rest in peace, sir.)

Nope, it is always Duke of Normandy no matter the monarch’s sex

In play: Michael Palin, rather out of character, played a dramatic role in _The Death of Stalin_ as Vyacheslav Molotov.

The Molotov cocktail is a Finnish creation from 1939-1940. While bottle-based improvised incendiary weapons have been used since the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939, the Molotov cocktail name was a pejorative Finnish reference to Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov, who was one of the architects of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact signed in late August 1939. The pact resulted in Soviet bombing missions and tank invasions of Finland.

In the 2004 Pixar animated film _The Incredibles_, the character Edna Mode is an eccentric fashion designer for superheroes, who imperiously declares that her costumes have “no capes.” There is much speculation over who the real-life inspirations were for the design of the character, including costume designer Edith Head, actress Linda Hunt, and fashion editor Anna Wintour.
